UW's Housing and Food Services has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Assistant Director for Residential Life.

The Assistant Director of Residential Life serves a strategic role within Housing & Food Services as a member of the UW Residential Life leadership team and is responsible for daily operations of campus residence halls and oversees an area of campus including providing support and direction to a variety of programs and engagement initiatives within and for our residential communities. This position directly supervises staff in the specialist position, area director position and program assistant position and indirectly supervises staff in the resident director and associate hall director positions.

This position is a temporary appointment that will oversee a variety of residential communities at different times. This position will also engage in the oversight of committees and projects in collaboration with others on the Residential Life staff team. This role will provide leadership for the recruitment and selection of full-time staff in addition to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the Residential Life unit. The estimated start date for this role is September 1, 2024 with an end date of August 29, 2025.

This role is responsible for the development and management of residential engagement programs, initiatives, and activities to support residential students in developing community and belonging on campus.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES Supervision 30%

  • Directly supervises full time staff in the area director position, specialist position, and program assistant position.
  • Second-line supervision of professional staff in the resident director and associate hall director positions specializing in residence education and student development in the implementation of a comprehensive residential life program and up to 70 student leaders.

    Administrative Management 30%

  • Establishes goals and objectives, collaborating with HFS and University management to ensure delivery of services to students.

  • Collaborates with other departmental offices to ensure delivery of services to residents.
  • Responds to and manages crisis situations as well as participates as a team member in crisis management and On-Call responsibilities.
  • Works closely with other Housing and Food Services (HFS) units to provide seamless delivery of services to residents.
  • Develops and implements program policies and procedures.
  • Provides written reports and documents as requested.
  • Develops, monitors, and tracks budget expenditures for areas of responsibility.
  • Serves as an approver for all pro card expenditures.
  • Serves as a Conduct Hearing Officer as outlined in the Residential Life Conduct Process Guide.

    Program Coordination and Student Development 30%

  • Participates in the planning, implementation, and assessment of residential academic and engagement initiatives.

  • Participates in the unit wide DEI initiatives.
  • Provides leadership to large scale operations and projects including staff recruitment and selection and diversity, equity, and inclusion training for the Residential Life full time staff team.
  • Leads a variety of committee and project-based work in collaboration with the Residential Life team.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with Residential Life Management Team in the development of training programs.
  • Assists in the development of initiatives to promote a welcoming living environment for all residents.

    Professional Development 10%

  • Maintains an awareness of current issues and developments within the field of student personnel.

  • Attends professional development workshops and training seminars held within HFS and the Division of Student Life.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

An effective residential life program supports student retention, socialization and academic success. This position advances the core mission of the University by developing and supporting learning communities and promoting student development and academic success.

POSITION COMPLEXITIES

HFS Residential Life houses over 9,300 students in residence halls and apartments. This position is responsible for program development, and the operationalizing of student development and applied environmental theory within this complex and quickly evolving environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position works a regular Monday through Friday schedule; however, it requires some evening and weekend commitments throughout the year including On-Call responsibilities approximately 6 weeks per year. Position involves program and project management, chairing workgroups, leading meetings, facilitating training, and speaking publicly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Student Development or related field.
  • Three years of full-time post-graduate residence hall and/or student apartment related experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and intercultural competency.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to support the University mission, vision, and values.

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute for requirements. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience that demonstrates:
