UW Libraries has an exciting opening for an Assistant Dean for Advancement (Chief Advancement Officer). This is a full-time, permanent position.

The Assistant Dean for Advancement/Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will serve as a leader and thought partner to the Dean of University Libraries. As a member of the Dean's senior leadership team, this role will work to advance strategic priorities through philanthropic support. The CAO will drive focused efforts to increase private support in service of the UW’s libraries across all three campuses and advance the University Libraries reputation on the regional, national and global stages.

In addition to promoting the goals and initiatives of the UW Libraries, this position will also oversee fundraising efforts for the University of Washington Press.

What You Will Do: Leadership and Team Management (40%)

•Partner with the Dean of University Libraries and the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives to advance the vision and priorities for UW Libraries, including leveraging UW-wide interdisciplinary funding initiatives. •As part of the University-wide Development planning process and in collaboration with the Dean and AVP for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives, establish annual fundraising goals and strategies for the UW Libraries and UW Press. •In collaboration with the Libraries’ Director of Communications, provide strategic direction for the creation of a communication plan that will promote the objectives of the Libraries’ philanthropic outreach efforts to donor constituencies. •Lead a team of advancement professionals who identify, engage, solicit and steward major and annual donors, campaign advisory board members, alumni, community and corporate leaders; building strong and beneficial relationships on behalf of the Libraries and UW Press. •Provide mentorship and staff development opportunities for the Libraries’ Advancement team. •Create and direct the strategies for external outreach with an aim of significantly expanding relationships and philanthropic support from external constituents. •Manage the Libraries Advancement team’s budget with discretionary authority. •Champion the Libraries strategic goals and initiatives with inclusiveness.

Frontline Fundraising (20%)

•Actively manage a portfolio of major-gift level current and prospective donors ($100,000+) and develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for each relationship. •In collaboration with the Libraries’ communications team, prepare written proposals and collateral that are aligned with and promote the Libraries’ priorities. Provide stewardship for Libraries endowments and other major gifts. •Work in partnership with University-wide development program leaders to coordinate development-related activities; share information and jointly develop strategies to secure gifts.

Strategy Development (20%)

•Create, manage and achieve measurable goals, objectives and strategies for the Libraries’ development activities in collaboration with the Dean and AVP for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives. •Regularly evaluate programs, assess progress toward goals, and regularly report results to the Dean and AVP for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives.

Campaign Development (20%)

•In close collaboration with the Dean, AVP for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives and University Advancement leadership, coordinate campaign planning for University Libraries and UW Press, including infrastructure development, volunteer engagement, prospect prioritization, internal communications coordination, and case definition and positioning. •Actively steward and build on the success of past campaigns to successfully support future multimillion-dollar campaigns.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree AND at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring:

•Fundraising experience at a comprehensive research university or comparable organization. •Understanding of the impact and importance of libraries within both societal and academic environments. •Demonstrated experience with personnel and budget management. •Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work equally well and effectively with scholars, administrative leaders, professional and union staff.

What You Can Expect:

•Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice. •Local and regional travel expected.
