This position reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence. Within Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS), the Assistant Athletic Director of Football Academics, in conjunction with the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, planning and execution of an integrity-based, comprehensive academic support program for football student-athletes at the University of Washington. The Assistant Athletic Director of Football Academics will serve as a member of the SAAS leadership team responsible for overseeing all staff, programming, and operations of the unit.

In addition, the Assistant Athletic Director will serve as an Academic Advisor/Coordinator for football. In this role, he/she will work with coaches and SAAS staff to help assigned student-athletes reach their academic goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing individualized academic plans for student-athletes as well as providing academic monitoring of assigned teams.

The employee will work independently, prioritize and complete ongoing tasks following established departmental, University of Washington, Big Ten, and NCAA guidelines and university policies. The Assistant Athletic Director will be expected to perform and work without direct supervision. Periodic in-progress checks of work are made.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Athletic Director of Football Academics include:

Leadership and Management –

  • Serve as a member of the SAAS leadership team, which oversees the day-to-day operations, policies, and procedures of the SAAS unit.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, planning, and execution of comprehensive academic support program for football student-athletes including orientation, academic advising, academic coordination, weekly academic meetings, compiling of academic reports and tracking systems. Serve as the team leader for the academic support team assigned to football including the coordination of weekly prep meetings.

  • Lead and manage the Director of Administration (academic advisor for football) working with football including training, development, and supervision.

  • Supervise the Senior Counselor working with football and assigned Olympic sports including hiring, training, performance reviews and appraisals, and professional development.

  • Ensure the football support staff is providing academic support services (e.g., choice of major, educational opportunities, graduation, academic monitoring, scheduling of tutoring, and transition to college life, and other personal issues related to academic progress) to student-athletes as effectively and efficiently as possible.

  • Monitor plans and keep abreast of academic concerns for the entire football team (e.g., academic dishonesty, GPA, and eligibility)

  • Coordinate and collaboratively execute the training and development of any new football academic advisors.

  • Coordinate educational programs with student-athlete development, player development and player engagement for assigned student-athletes and teams. Academic Support –

  • Provide academic services to assigned teams including academic advising, academic coordination, monitoring, and referral to campus or SAAS academic assistance programs. Specifically, the Assistant Athletic Director will be responsible for all aspects of course registration, major declaration, degree and graduation planning, and internship/career exploration and development. The Director will work closely with departmental advisors to ensure timely degree progress and graduation for each assigned student-athlete.

  • Remain updated on university regulations, policies and procedures and ensure student-athletes, coaches, and staff are kept abreast of changing regulations, degree requirements, and campus policies.

  • Provide consistent and frequent communication, verbally and in writing, with academic staff and coaches about the academic progress of assigned caseload of student-athletes including weekly academic coaches’ meetings.

  • Collaborate with the Compliance office and University Registrar to ensure NCAA and Big Ten continuing eligibility standards are met for assigned teams including degree progress, major declaration, review of quarterly academic records, and projections of degree progress to meet satisfactory progress rules. Coordinate communication with student-athletes and coaches regarding eligibility issues and solutions.

  • Track and produce graduation projections, grades, and certification reports quarterly.

  • Present academic information sessions and programs as needed. Recruiting and Onboarding –

  • In conjunction with the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence, organize recruiting efforts for the football program including individual official/unofficial visits, recruit meetings and recruiting presentations during recruiting weekends.

  • Assist with NCAA initial eligibility reviews for incoming transfer student-athletes.

  • Communicate with departments on campus to reconcile transfer courses.Conduct academic training and information sessions for any new football staff.Meet with NFL scouts and provide requested information per FERPA guidelines.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence.

  • Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington, and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is to ensure the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree required in education, counseling, sport management, or related field. A minimum of four years of experience working in collegiate athletics, education, or student development/services. Additional Requirements: Proven ability to develop programs, create teams, manage staff, coordinate resources, and create a positive culture at the collegiate level. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines.Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction. Ability to effectively counsel and advise students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns. Outstanding communication skills both oral and written, including skill in writing memos/reports. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.Working knowledge of collegiate athletics and student-athlete demands. Ability to establish working relationships and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the university community. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and student-athletes.Willingness to work night and weekend hours as needed, especially in peak demand times of recruiting and the academic year. Preferred Qualifications: Strong preference given to those candidates who have worked with football student-athletes at the Division I level.
