The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Counselor. This role serves as the primary administrative link for students to the Department, College, and the University by coordinating practices, policies and programs that help guide and support student learning.

The Academic Counselor is responsible for interfacing with approximately 500 undergraduate majors by responding to emails, interacting with a diverse student body, and engaging with staff and faculty to discuss academic affairs. They will use individual judgment to make decisions regarding student academic progress and providing information to and connecting students with University resources to support their personal and academic endeavors. The Academic Counselor will advise students in the areas of academic planning, interpretation of department, college, and university requirements, degree requirements, career exploration, and other related matters. In addition to academic and career resources, the Academic Counselor will help connect students with campus health and wellness resources.

This position will report to the Academic Services Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Advising (75%) social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, or related field

  • Provide individualized, holistic support for undergraduate students with regard to all curricular requirements, helping students navigate the process associated with their academic records, degree audits, and registration, guiding students to make progress toward the degree for timely graduation, experiential learning opportunities and helping students prepare for post-graduation, with resources for career and job search planning or the graduate school application process. This role requires collaboration with the advising team, faculty, and other campus offices to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees.

  • Work with students to explore the ways their interests relate to work, connect their choice of a major to broader career plans, or explore information about the world of work.

  • Conduct proactive and reactive academic interventions and provide outreach efforts focused on retention and academic success; provide support with University policies and procedures (low scholarship, current quarter drop, former quarter drop, incomplete grades, etc.), guidance, and referral to academic departments, faculty, academic support services (writing and study centers, academic support programs, etc.), crisis intervention (SafeCampus), personal counseling and therapy (Counseling Center), financial aid, residence life, and other University resources.

  • Assist students with processes for academic actions (such as declaring a major, graduation applications, degree audit exceptions, transfer credit/study abroad evaluations) and troubleshoot issues with the Academic Services Director or central campus offices as needed.

  • Participate in advising & orientation sessions for incoming first-year and transfer students, as well as other student outreach/yield events. Assist new and transfer students with the transition to college (e.g. departmental orientation sessions).

  • Participate in Departmental and campus events and activities illustrating a commitment to students' sense of belonging and their success in Anthropology.

  • Partner with academic advisors across the University around student concerns, petitions, or other academic actions.

  • Use University systems (and develop internal if needed) to document advising sessions and develop practices for timely and consistent follow-up with students.

  • Effectively utilize multiple modalities for student interaction, including phone and email, meetings with students (both individual and group), including in-person, phone, and interactive video conferencing (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).

  • Build effective working relationships and open communication across socio-cultural differences with students, staff, and faculty; communicate effectively in writing and verbally across campus constituents.

  • Design and present a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as the selection of a major and/or minor, program requirements, credits required for programs selected, and career-related workshops including career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning. Work collaboratively with the Academic Services Director to develop workshops as needed.

  • Work collaboratively with any student peer advisors or student advisory groups related to the Department.Administrative (25%)

  • Provide feedback to the Academic Services Director on an ongoing basis to improve procedures and student experience.

  • Maintain files and student/alumni records according to University retention policies.

  • Curate and format regular email announcements to majors; maintain major listserv frequently; monitor and triage department advising email account.

  • Assist with compiling program reports and statistics.

  • Maintain Departmental website pages related to student services and the undergraduate program.

  • Coordinate, edit, and update all undergraduate advising materials and publications at the direction of the Academic Services Director; including the website, social media, and other published sources.

  • Assist in reviewing and updating course time schedules for accuracy on a quarterly basis, working closely with the Academic Services Director to ensure that the needs of the undergraduate students are met.

  • Support planning of special events, including graduations, honors events, and other collaborative events across campus that highlight the value of a liberal arts education.

  • Serve on committees/working groups as needed.

  • Participate in the UW campus advising professional community, including professional development opportunities.

  • Special projects as needed. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, humanities, natural sciences related field and two to three years of relevant work experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, and work independently, effectively, and efficiently in a collaborative and fast-paced work environment.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing.

  • Strong ability to multitask and manage time.

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Spreadsheet and database experience; ability to create and maintain simple databases (Access, Excel).

  • Competence with MS Office software and Google suite.

  • Experience in website maintenance.

  • Demonstrated ability to write for student audiences.

  • Experience with event planning.

  • Basic program tracking and assessment skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • A minimum of two years of experience in student services, student advising, student activities & engagement, customer service experience, relationship management, or other mentoring.

  • Demonstrated facilitator skills; able to manage diverse faculty, staff, and students.

  • Knowledge of UW student administrative systems (SDB, DARS, EARS) and UW policies and procedures relating to academics and curriculum.

  • Experience working with and supporting a diverse student population at a four-year institution.
