The Academic Advisor at the Milgard School of Business serves as a member of a professional team managing undergraduate admission processes for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (BABA) for incoming and continuing students, in collaboration with the Office of Admissions. This team provides comprehensive advising services for undergraduate students admitted into BABA as well as advising prospective UW Tacoma students, and current students referred by the University Academic Advising office. As part of the Milgard staff team, this position has regular collaborative interactions with other staff, faculty and the leadership team, including the Dean. The Academic Advisor will also collaborate with the campus community including but not limited to the Office of Admissions, University Academic Advising, and academic advisors from other schools and programs and campus committees.
This position requires an individual with excellent communication and organizational skills, being adept at communicating with students and colleagues (both staff and faculty), having well-rounded leadership abilities, and the capacity to work well as part of a team. This position also requires acquisition of knowledge of existing and emerging program/course changes, policies and procedures. This position will play a key role in developing and implementing assessment measures to inform policies and procedures that ensure effective support and advising for students.
The Academic Advisor will use prior professional advising experience to empower students to identify interests and match personal strengths with educational and career opportunities. Important aspects of the work include learning-centered advising, attention to detail, frequent contact with the University’s administrative system, and active engagement with faculty and staff. This individual will also participate in the admissions review process, and lead and/or participate in the planning of student events including orientations and new student welcome sessions. Being part of the student support team, this position will support Milgard’s recruitment efforts and participate on campus and school committees and workgroups. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide one-on-one advising for individual students 80%
Advise current business students on major courses of study, career options, academic planning, program eligibility requirements, degree/graduation requirements, assist them in identifying pathways to graduation, and opportunities that enhance their education (e.g., internship, study abroad, student clubs and organizations).
Advise UW Tacoma pre-major students on admission requirements and general information about the Milgard School of Business. Students may be referred by the University Academic Advising Office or may request to meet directly.
Evaluate Bachelor of Arts Business Administration (BABA) application files, review student transcripts, make admission decisions, or refer for additional review.
Assist students in the interpretation of program and university requirements and policies.
Assist students in navigation of University’s administrative policies, procedures and processes.
Monitor quarterly registration, following up with students who have not registered.
Follow up with students experiencing academic difficulty.
Refer and support students in connecting with resources to support their personal and educational needs.
Offer advising opportunities in different modalities to serve diverse needs of the student body (online drop-in, remote advising, canvas site, etc.).Collaboration and Program Support 20%
Collaborate with Milgard School centers to promote their minors and cocurricular experiences.
Serve as ad-hoc member of the Milgard Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC).
Work with the BABA team to provide recommendations to UPC that promote student success.
In collaboration with BABA team, provide recommendations for annual course offerings, identifying courses that may create registration and resolve graduation timing issues for students.
Establish and maintain working relationships with pre-major advisors and Milgard team members and campus colleagues (e.g., Undergraduate Academic Advising, Student and Enrollment Services, Equity and Diversity, International Student Services, Global Honors, Study Abroad, etc.) to offer joint programs which help students integrate their academic, career and personal goals.
Serve on Milgard and university committees as needed.
Assist with editing and maintenance of BABA canvas site.
Coordinate and participate in events promoting admission to the business major.
Participate in Milgard and campus events.
Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Business, education, social sciences or a related field and at least 3 years’ experience in admissions, recruitment, academic advising, student services, or student counseling in a higher education setting. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills.
Ability to understand, apply, and communicate school and University policies.
Ability to work independently and as part of team.
Approachable, with a desire to support and enhance the student body within the Milgard School of Business.
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Student Development Administration, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Business or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to work within the administrative structure of a multi-campus university.
Strong technological skills and experience with multiple software platforms, including degree audit systems, and student information systems.
