Role Summary

The role oversees the daily safety and financial performance of AAG Safety resources to elevate safety within each of the operating divisions and operational business partners (vendors). As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of embedded safety professionals in flight operations, inflight cabin safety and prime vendors to actively identify and correct safety hazards through surveillance of the operation and through investigation of events. This role will partner with the AAG operating divisions and vendors to promote safety and ensure the highest level of safety is maintained. Additionally, this role must be qualified to be the designated 14 CFR 119.65 Director of Safety for Alaska Airlines.

Key Duties

  • Lead the company execution of the core value of safety by ensuring single level of safety standards are maintained across the Alaska and Horizon operational network.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on matters relating to safety and safety assurance of AAG Flight Operations, Inflight and vendors supporting the operation.

  • Oversee the investigation of incidents and accidents in the operational environment, document findings and implement controls to prevent recuring events.

  • Partner with operating divisions to establish meaningful safety promotion to elevate safety and increase awareness to current safety trends and emerging risks.

  • Provide timely advice and direction on safety matters to operations leaders at all levels of the company.

  • Monitor AAG’s compliance with all applicable safety regulations.

  • Represent AAG regarding safety matters dealing with government agencies to include the FAA and NTSB.

  • Lead with a high-performance culture mindset, a focus on practical solutions and efficiency, and a predisposition toward managing outcomes versus explaining variances.

  • Influence across operational leaders and Supply Chain to create and monitor business partner safety standards.

  • Support and consult AAG IEP/QA programs on safety risks through regular updates with IEP/QA program leadership.

  • Influence company culture through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.

  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and functions.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 10 years of experience in aviation safety, aviation quality assurance, or aviation risk management

  • 5 years of people leadership experience.

  • FAA Air Transport Pilot certificate with type rating in one or more of the following: DC-9/B-717, B-737, B-787, A320, A330

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Aviation, Safety, or willingness to attain a bachelor’s degree within six years of start date.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to create collaborative relationships that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company, with others in the organization, and with key external business partners.

  • Exceptional integrity, with impeccable ethics in safety and compliance.

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree

  • Previous airline flight operations experience

  • FAA Certificated Pilot or Mechanic

Salary Range

$188,650 - $311,350 / year

Total Target Compensation Range (incl. bonus & equity)

$320,704 - $524,295

Salary Details

The pay range and total target compensation package listed above is the expected pay offered for this position at the start of employment. Your pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, your relevant experience/level, experience level, and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don't typically hire at the top of the range.
