Job Description Position Summary Under minimal to no supervision, sets up and operates computer numerical control lathes, mills and machining centers to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specification by performing the following duties: Core Competencies Required for this Position Great inter-personal skills. Good verbal and written communications skills. Organization and time management skills. Problem solving/analysis. Primary Responsibilities Performs advanced-level sets up of CNC machining equipment. Reviews set-up sheet and specifications to determine set-up procedures, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished parts. May make layout and program equipment, as needed. Selects the best tooling to be used, given the work material and machining method for the particular job. Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines. Maximizes equipment capability by calculating optimum feeds and speeds. Manipulates controls and enters commands to make sub-routine programs. Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools. Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process to achieve desired results. Grinds worn tools. Measures work piece for conformance to specifications. Performs advanced machine maintenance activities. Troubleshoots problems, using machining practices and principles. Notifies supervisor of machine repair needs. Performs housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and orderly workstation and performs basic machine upkeep, such as wiping down outside surface of machine, lubrication, etc. May train other operators.
