Available Title(s): 570G-YNCSNPS - Agricultural Research Technologist 3 Business Title: Agricultural Research Technologist 3 Employee Type: Classified Position Details: Summary of Duties: Employee is responsible for coordinating, conducting, and supervising field operations and data collection at numerous dryland agricultural research sites spread over a wide geographic area in eastern Washington. This position will be in charge of all field activities and supervises a part-time technical assistant. There may be occasions in which the employee may be supervising field activities at several research sites simultaneously. Some overnight travel is required. The employee will operate, design, maintain, calibrate and repair research equipment; establish field experiments; collect and prepare residue, soil, and grain samples; conduct laboratory research; and coordinate the collection of other data as required for each experiment. Field Research | 35% Selects methods, procedures and sites to meet objectives of study plan, including: developing technical recording and reporting procedures; taking action or making recommendations based on preliminary interpretation of data. Work closely with collaborating scientists, other research technicians, graduate students and post-docs on field experiments. Designs and carries out field experiments, including: evaluating, modifying and applying related methods, procedures and techniques developed by others in specialized area of study. Collects data from field experiments and maintains records. Prepares data for computer input; including interpreting computer output. Operates, calibrates, and maintains a variety of field equipment, technical-analytical equipment, and instrumentation to examine and measure biological, chemical and physical properties of various plant and soil materials. Laboratory Research | 25% Collects and prepares specimens in order to perform laboratory analysis. Operates and maintains instruments and equipment in order to perform precise measurements in laboratory, greenhouse, field or nursery; samples, surveys and reports on field or greenhouse conditions. Collects data from laboratory experiments and maintains records. Conducts other laboratory research as directed by the PI. Performs bio-assays. Manage Research Equipment | 20% Installs, operates, maintains and calibrates a variety of specialized equipment and instruments for field and laboratory research. Establish and maintain accurate records for equipment maintenance, herbicide, fertilizer and pesticide application. Maintain safety standards and records as required. Maintains and operates field equipment such as wheel and crawler tractors, plot combine, undercutter, rodweeder, plot drills, plot sprayers, trucks, and project vehicles. Maintains several weather stations at field research sites as well as precision equipment such as the neutron moisture probe, GPS hardware and software, balances, and hydraulic soil press. Welds and performs other skilled mechanical shop duties, including fabricating research equipment as necessary. Order materials and supplies needed in support of research and maintain inventory records. Data Analysis and Findings | 10% Independently conducts analysis and evaluation of research data. Presents project findings to groups and attends technical meetings and present research results as requested by PI. Attends technical and professional meetings. Develops graphs and tables for publications and presentations. Confers with scientists or other technical personnel concerning programs or projects.
