Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Worker Safety & Health Instructor/Designer in Richland, Washington
Overview

The individual filling this role will join a team of skilled professionals that are tasked with delivering and developing Worker Safety & Health Training. Topic areas include (but are not limited to) lock-out/tag-out, confined space entry, lift equipment operation, fall-protection/work at heights, respirator usage, and the use of shop cranes. In this role, you will support learners from across the lab including members of the craft workforce and more broadly members of the Operational Systems Directorate as well as members of our research organizations.
Responsibilities
This role requires an in-depth knowledge of and a demonstrated ability to employ best practices associated with the delivery of Worker Safety & Health training. It will serve as a resource to other members of the instructional design team and may be asked to lead projects involving the design of new or redesign of existing Worker Safety & Health training programs. Greater than 50% of this role’s time will be spent with learners leading classroom and on-the-job training events and activities. In concert with these activities, this role will also administer written examinations and practical exercises designed to assess learner skill and knowledge. In fulfilling the requirements of this role, you will also consult with subject matter experts and program owners from across the Worker-Safety & Health division and with members of the broader instructional design team to develop new and revise existing training curricula. You may also be asked to participate as a member of an assessment team evaluative the alignment and effectiveness of training that has been developed and implemented.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-
MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Experienced Worker Safety & Health Instructor
Knowledge of 29 CFR 1910 OSHA Standards
Experience as a member of the craft workforce – particularly as an electrician, a millwright, a pipefitter, a machinist, or a stationary operating engineer.
Experience as an instructional designer is a plus.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
The individual filling this role will, on occasion, be required to don PPE (hard hat, feet protection, gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection), be exposed to the elements, and may have to access radiologically posted areas.
Additional Information
If selected for an in-person interview, you will be asked to lead a 10-15 minute session where you will be tasked with demonstrating your skills as a Worker Safety & Health instructor in a classroom setting. The content and materials that you use for this demonstration are your choice, our only ask is that it be related to Worker Safety & Health training.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
