Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. The project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 56 million gallons (212 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The cleanup project is one of DOE’s most technically challenging and the largest undertaking of its kind—equivalent to building two nuclear power plants. The construction site spans 65 acres (26 hectares) and includes facilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, high-level waste vitrification, and the analytical laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, and other support facilities.
Positions located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) work a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other work locations may work a 9-80’s schedule, M-F 7:00 am to 4:30 pm with alternating Fridays off. Extended hours as needed.
Essential Job Duties:
Independently performs complex professional engineering assignments in a global business unit design office or field requiring the application of specialized and/or advanced engineering principles at the conceptual level including implementation of Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) requirements. May direct personnel on special studies or special segments of a client project. May participate in the formulation and development of advanced engineering concepts associated with proposal development design or construction. Recognized within Bechtel for professional competence and potential as an outstanding specialist.
Develops nuclear criticality safety evaluations and calculations.
Develops, maintains, and implements nuclear criticality safety program requirements.
Develops nuclear safety calculations, including radiological and chemical consequence calculations.
Develops and interprets design criteria and specifications for most complex systems, processes, structures and equipment in a global business unit.
Serves as a consultant to engineering management, providing advice and counsel on special engineering assignments.
Assists in new business efforts involving specialized engineering applications. Develops preliminary cost estimates and participates in proposal preparation and presentation.
Prepares and reviews project controls, cost estimates, and staffing requirements for projects, forecasts and change orders.
Provides technical direction and assigns work to subordinate engineers and others who assist on specific assignments. Reviews and checks work.
Coordinates and monitors the work of unique field engineering activities and of specialized outside consultants. May participate in the selection of outside consultants.
Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility, new technologies, methods, or materials.
Interprets new or special governmental regulations engineering codes, standards, criteria and performance data.
Participates in the development and coordination of special technical education and training programs for clients and/or Bechtel personnel.
Assists in the preparation and reviews of project procedures and cost estimates for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

Knowledge in the discipline of NCS, including NCS evaluations, program implementation, computation tools, standard, and regulatory guidelines.
Knowledge on the meaning and use of the ANSI/ANS 8 Series National Standards and applicable DOE Orders, Standards, and Guides.
Technical knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, application of engineering methods and materials, and application of computers.
Broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and of principles and practices of related technical areas.
Knowledge of current industry or regulatory codes and standards and study criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
Skill in oral and written communications.
Understands Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides, and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
Good knowledge of 2-D and 3-D computer aided design tools.
A Bachelor degree in Nuclear Engineering or other engineering field from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 13 years of relevant experience.
Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Experience with DOE nuclear projects nuclear criticality safety programs and safety basis development, or commercial nuclear power plant licensing or analysis.
Knowledge in nuclear safety/engineering.
Nuclear Engineering degree from an accredited college or university.
Professional engineering (PE) License in Nuclear Engineering or other engineering disciplines.
