Candidates for this position will support work being performed in PNNL’s Emerging Threats and Technologies Division within the National Security Directorate (NSD). The Emerging Threats and Technologies Division’s mission space is comprised of cybersecurity, infrastructure protection, policy and intelligence, and security systems expertise. The organization consists of over 300 scientists, engineers, and analysts with backgrounds in cyber, nuclear, intelligence, policy, data science, and other fields. Within the Emerging Threats and Technologies Division, experts in the Cyber Analytics and Analysis group create reliable, repeatable, and robust methods for obtaining and maintaining cyber situational awareness. We are looking for an Cyber Security Engineer to join our Analytic Architectures team for a position that is approximately 40% IT Engineer and 60% Cyber Security Engineer. The role is predominantly concerned with the maintenance and operation of a large scale cyber-data information system, but opportunities exist for creation of new solutions and updating technology.

Responsibilities

This Cyber Security Engineer will apply engineering and technical principles to the design and implementation of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems for a cyber security vulnerability and threat analysis program. Specifically, they will work with two separate project-specific networks for an operational program collecting say Tb's of data per day, processing of multiple petabytes per year and ensuring consistency across networks.

Typical project tasks can include:

  • Server room hardware and software maintenance; including patching and refresh management

  • Management of an elasticsearch cluster

  • Preparation of security audit documentation and standard operating procedures

  • Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases

  • Identifies project requirements, plans, and constructs network to meet functional, operational, and security requirements

  • Creates and maintains large data ETL pipelines; experience with ML Engineering is a plus

  • Partners with other IT elements at the laboratory to ensure organizational policies are met

  • Prepares team and infrastructure for outages and future cloud migration

Technologies and Skills Routinely Used:

  • Cyber Security: Working Knowledge of cyber security best practices including the implementation of the CIA Triad in software design; knowledge of fundamental workings and security of telecommunication network design, operating systems, software, and/or hardware (IT/OT)

  • Development Environment: Combination of cloud (dominantly AWS) & on-prem/local

  • Development Tools: Atlassian Suite, Gitlab, Preferred IDE

  • Programming Languages: Python, Java, Javascript, Nifi, Ansible, Puppet, Kafka

  • Compute Environments: Linux (EC2), Docker, Kubernetes, Windows

As the engineer advances in their career and role, they are expected to communicate across NSD’s cyber and IT communities to create and maintain operational environments for mission specific tasks. They will collaborate with external sponsor organizations and industry to identify opportunities to propose new work and facilitate the adoption of analytics by user communities. The ideal candidate will be able to guide and shape technical development while balancing mission-specific constraints.

This position with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is for a full-time onsite assignment at the Richland campus.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Required experience: Kubernetes, Hadoop or CDP, NiFi

  • Experience with Airflow, Beats, Splunk forwarder, and/or Minio/Trino

  • Experience with CDP or other large scale database technologies (creation, deployment, & maintenance)

  • Skills in Ansible/SIMP/Sicura and other deployment automation

  • Expert in deploying secure Linux systems. Experience with Windows a plus

  • Q//SCI or TS//SCI holder preferred
