Overview

The Protective Force Security Officer position is a full-time position with variable and flexible hours. The incumbent must be able to work flexible hours and shift work that are conducive to a 24/7 security operation, as well as be receptive to being called into work with short notice. The Security Officer position is an essential employee and is required to work their scheduled shift during all lab holidays, closures, releases and delays. This position reports to the Protective Force Program Manager and receives direction from the Protective Force Lieutenant and Shift Sergeant, as appropriate. The position requires professionalism, initiative, drive, rigor, and accountability.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • The incumbent is responsible for responding to alarms, making notifications and coordinating events as requested. Security Officers are critical in ensuring the security and safety of PNNL staff, visitors and facilities by initiating emergency response and management notifications. Each emergency event requires the incumbent to take appropriate steps to mitigate the event through proper communication and response when required.

  • The Security Officer position is the primary focal point for providing timely and appropriate support for security and safety related events for PNNL and carry out the Protective Force mission to protect national security interests, government property and personnel located on the PNNL campus. The incumbent must interface with all levels of PNNL management and staff, other contractors, DOE, and other sponsors while maintaining a highly professional and positive demeanor.

  • The incumbent develops and maintains working relationships with PNNL staff and management, which include Operations Managers, Facility Managers, Building Managers, Off-Normal Event Coordinators, PNNL Communications and Safety staff, DOE staff; visitors, and other Safeguards and Security Division staff members.

  • To accomplish this duty, the SO must have knowledge of PNNL emergency response procedures and systems, knowledge of the operation of computer based multi-line phones, two-way radios, operate the campus camera system and emergency call stations, document events through the computer-aided dispatch, activate the mass communication system, function calmly under stressful emergency situations, prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic environment where task priorities constantly change, and respond to security alarms.

Additional Responsiblities:

  • Single point of contact for all PNNL emergencies and off normal events; Initiates emergency responses, , fire, ambulance and police.

  • Respond to security alarms. If necessary, employ weaponless self-defense tactics to protect oneself or others.

  • Provide absence coverage for other SOs (includes pre-scheduled absences such as vacations and training, as well as unscheduled absences such as illnesses and injuries).

  • Notify PNNL management and staff during emergencies, following applicable procedures.

  • Provide industrial alarm monitoring and access control for PNNL facilities and respond to alarms as directed.

  • Conduct safety and security checks of PNNL facilities and provide escorts for staff, as appropriate.

  • Operation and maintenance of multiple pieces of equipment and their related databases, access control systems, fire alarms, industrial and programmatic security alarms, switchboard, and web-based telephone systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DOE NTC PFT 110 Basic Security Officer trained.

  • Associate Degree in Criminal Justice/Security field.

  • Military and or Law Enforcement experience.

  • Current Q Clearance.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

*Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

This position requires the following:

  • Valid state-issued driver's license

  • Applicants must possess the mental, sensory, and motor skills, and be medically fit, as required to safely and effectively perform all normal and emergency response job duties.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment (and biennially thereafter) physical and psychological exam per 10 Code of Federal Regulation part 1046.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
