Job Responsibilities/Duties

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State manages 177 underground tanks containing approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes, part of the nation's Cold War environmental legacy resulting from decades of reprocessing nuclear fuel for weapons production. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment Mission is to treat this tank waste and close the Hanford Site tanks to eliminate the environmental hazard posed by the waste and protect the Columbia River. This represents one of the world's largest and most complex environmental cleanup projects.

The Mission Analysis and Planning group within Washington River Protection Solutions supports the tank waste treatment mission through the development and analysis of plans, risks, contingencies, and alternatives for mission execution. Planning activities occur on a range of time scales, from detailed near-term operational planning through long-term system planning. Plans and analyses are backed by computer simulations and process modes simulating waste retrieval and treatment.

This position will be on the System Planning and Alternatives Analysis Team, a team of eight engineers who employ mission simulations and engineering expertise to perform complex techno-economic analysis of the long-term Hanford Tank Waste Treatment Mission and provide insight to key decision-makers. Specifically, the accountabilities of the engineer include:

  • Develop ad-hoc chemical process and operations models to simulate alternative plans for completing the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment Mission

  • Conduct uncertainty and sensitivity analyses around planning scenarios

  • May act as model lead, including reviewing and approving (approval authority) for requirements baselines as well as leading acceptance testing

  • Document changes to model designs, algorithms, and inputs

  • Maintain configuration management of model changes using industry standard version control systems (i.e. Azure DevOps and Git) and comply with applicable software quality assurance requirements and modeling best practices

  • Develop state-of-the-art data visualizations and analytics

  • Support NQA-1 compliant software development processes
