Overview

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a dynamic scientific leader with a national and international reputation and record of accomplishment to serve as the Director of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD).

Responsibilities

The Physical Sciences Division Director (DD) is responsible for providing scientific leadership for the Division’s research programs and for maintaining the quality of research in the division. You will achieve this by collaborating with Division staff, the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical & Computational Sciences, Program Leads for Basic Energy Sciences, and others to elevate existing programs and develop new programs in chemical physics, catalysis, geosciences, separations, and materials. You will provide strategic direction to approximately 300 scientists, engineers, post-docs, students, and visiting scientists, manage $40M research budget, and $7.5M operations budget.

In your organization role, you will be responsible for all areas of management within the division including operations, environmental health and safety, administration, budget, hiring, and employee development. You will establish and communicate policy, mission, goals, and accomplishments to division staff and to the broader research community. We work closely as a team across the directorate and the lab to assure efficient, effective, and safe execution of meaningful research. You will participate in formulating the research policy and strategic direction of the Laboratory as a whole and provide consultation to Laboratory leadership regarding new initiatives for the strategic direction of PSD. Further, elevating the visibility of our fundamental chemical and material science and its application areas by working with other relevant National Laboratories, as well as academic and industrial joint institutes and partners will be an important goal. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 15 years work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 13 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials, or physics and a recognized publication record of research accomplishments in that field.

  • Proven experience with management of large-scale scientific projects or organizations and collaborative science, and leading multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Ability to effectively engage with funding agencies such as DOE Office of Science and demonstrated ability to initiate substantial new research efforts and collaborations.

  • Experience in effective management and administrative oversight, creativity in decision making and problem solving, and a dedication to mentoring and career development.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact at the highest level of management, both internally and externally, in a constructive and collaborative manner.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner. Which requires:

  • US Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for-cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
