Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking students who have a passion for science. The Energy Sciences: Experimental and Modeling (ESEM) University Consortium, part of the NNSA Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (NNSA-MSIPP), is a research-based program for students who are traditionally under-represented in science and engineering at one of the university partners; Prairie View A&M University, Tennessee State University, Morehouse College and the Inter American University of Puerto Rico San Germán Campus. The successful applicant is required to be a currently enrolled student at one of these institutions and will work side-by-side with a scientist in a specific research area that aligns with NNSA’s mission by applying cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger. The areas of focus for the ESEM University Consortium are the application of both experimental and modeling methods to the interaction of metal cations with amino acids and enzymes, informatics for materials discovery, the synthesis, characterization and fabrication of polymers for energy production and harvesting including nuclear materials, and the environmental impact of new materials.
PNNL’s core capabilities span a wide range of topics including chemical and molecular sciences; chemical engineering; biological systems science; climate change science; environmental subsurface science; applied materials science and engineering; applied nuclear science and technology; advanced computer science, visualization, and data; systems engineering and integration; and large-scale user facilities/advanced instrumentation.

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Candidates must be matriculated in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) seeking degree program at one of the universities in the NNSA ESEM Consortium.
Candidates must have the ability to obtain future security clearance, which required U.S. citizenship.
