Amentum Nuclear Safety Engineer in Richland, Washington

The Plant Engineering organization provides engineering oversight, program support, and qualified staff to support the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) mission. Near term support is provided by the Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC). The mission includes safely storing, treating, and immobilizing the highly hazardous radiological wastes created during prior periods of nuclear processing at the Hanford Reservation. The Plant Engineering organization and programs provide the framework for executing engineering work. Plant Engineering personnel are responsible for the technical adequacy of Plant Engineering products and decisions.

Within the Plant Engineering organization, the Nuclear and Chemical safety organization is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Nuclear Safety and Chemical Safety programs. This position is specific to the Nuclear Safety program.

This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS

  • Applies expertise to broadly stated technical problems.

  • Identifies and defines problems; plans and conducts research aimed at their solution. Conducts or leads special studies on new technologies, methods, and materials.

  • Carries out special or unique studies requiring unconventional or novel approaches or research techniques.

  • Uses all available guides and precedents and expands and develops where these contain critical gaps, are only partially related to the problem, or are largely lacking because of the novel character of the project.

  • Leads, as requested, in the formulation of advanced engineering/scientific concepts during proposal development and preliminary design phases and presents these to client management.

  • Conducts research, presents papers, and keeps abreast of technological developments in a specialty, keeping engineering management informed of important new advances.

  • Serves as consultant to project and specialty engineering/scientific groups, providing advice and counsel on assignments having special and unique features.

  • Supports preparation of and reviews discipline estimates, discipline work plans, budgets and schedules.

  • Assists in the development and coordination of special educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel and/or clients.

  • Participates in and fosters a work environment based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

  • Performs assessments

  • Maintain the Safety Basis by performing the following tasks on a regular basis:

  • Supports planned revisions to the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) and other associated documents like the Process Hazards Analysis (PrHA)

  • Supports origination of Scoping Plan for revisions to the Safety Basis documents (DSA, PrHA, etc)

  • Tracks change requests and provides status of requests for the Nuclear Safety Change Registry System

  • Originates Safety Evaluations (SEs), future Unreviewed Safety Questions (USQ), as assigned to evaluate project design documents and determine if they present any change to the Safety Basis and determine approval authority

  • Performs project document reviews to determine how they affect the Nuclear Safety Organization

  • Leads or scribes for Hazard Analysis and contribute to the discussion as applicable

  • Supports early planning meetings for design changes to the Nuclear Facility to be aware of how they affect the Nuclear Safety Organization

REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent education) in an appropriate engineering discipline or related science from a four-year accredited college or university

Experience:

  • Minimum of nine years of professional experience

  • This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2 and the selected candidate must meet education and experience requirements in accordance with that order. Must have 2 years of job-related experience with 1 year of nuclear experience on an active site.

  • Experience with DOE nuclear projects safety basis development, or commercial nuclear power plant licensing or analysis.

  • Knowledge in nuclear safety/engineering.

  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, application of engineering methods and materials, and application of computers.

  • Knowledge of current industry or regulatory codes and standards and study criteria pertinent to the nuclear engineering discipline.

  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.)

Preferred Experience:

  • Understanding of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides, and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).

  • Experience in processing facilities, DOE facilities, or DOD facilities

  • Experience with national consensus codes and standards

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(EFNM) Exposed Field Non-Manual

Performs desk work, including writing, computer workstation processes, and telephone operation. Arranges for and/or performs presentations, oral reports, planning meetings, and other formal and informal contacts, requiring long periods of sitting. Oversees field activities through inspections, testing and equipment operations, which requires walking, standing, bending, and turning along with wearing of personal protective equipment. Occasional loading, transport, and unloading of tools and/or supplies specific to an activity.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $112,835.92 - $$178,251.96 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant internal equity, and alignment with market data.)

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
