Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Nuclear Engineer 3 in Richland, Washington

Overview

Protecting U.S. residents and visitors is among our nation’s highest priorities. As adversaries gain access to sophisticated technologies and materials, the threats grow more dynamic and complex—from cyber and nuclear to chemical and biological weapons of mass effect and other forms of terrorism. The PNNL national security mission employs our researchers, tools, and technologies to play a key role in advancing the ability to identify and secure nuclear materials, detect weapons of mass effect, manage nonproliferation treaties, secure our nation's borders, and protect critical infrastructures. PNNL’s scientific discovery and capabilities—rooted in innovative theory, methods, algorithms, and tools—are enabling stronger, more resilient technologies and systems to safeguard national security. Coupled with decades of radiological and nuclear materials expertise, advanced computing and threat analysis capabilities, and a broad fundamental science base, we are identifying and countering emerging threats that have significant impact at home and around the globe.

Do you want to impact national security? Does addressing our Nation's most challenging problems motivate you? Come and join our Nuclear Engineering Group! Our group consists of 6 teams spanning core performance, fuels and materials performance, material production technologies, reactor technologies, nuclear safety analysis, and project coordination. As a leader in national security, we possess a longstanding capability in the production of nuclear materials to support our nuclear deterrent and to counter proliferation of nuclear weapons. Another major focus of the group is the design, analysis, and development of advanced nuclear reactors and nuclear systems. The group also leads significant efforts in nuclear safety analysis of reactor systems and transportation packages. We are searching for an energetic early career nuclear engineer with experience in nuclear applications to support a range of projects.

Responsibilities

Designs, develops, and analyzes components utilized in nuclear applications and nuclear non-proliferation such as reactor fuel, reactor cores, radiation shielding, and instrumentation. Researches and develops analytical methods and technologies supporting all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle including R&D activities related to storage, transportation, and disposal of used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste and long-term performance of waste forms. Supports nuclear regulatory work, risk-informed nuclear regulatory analysis, and probabilistic risk analysis. Addresses facility and process safety needs, principally in the area of nuclear-related construction, operation, and decommissioning. Development and application of radioactive materials, radioactive isotopes, and radiation generating devices. Studies the effects of interactions of radiation with materials including biological effects. Researches, evaluates, and controls health hazards to permit the safe use of ionizing radiation. Investigates principles by which radiation interacts with matter and living systems. Studies environmental levels of radioactivity and the effects of radiation on biological systems on earth and in space. Applies knowledge of radiation physics, health physics, biology, instrumentation, and computational modeling in laboratory and field settings to ensure that radiation exposure to researchers, students, industrial workers, patients, and the public is minimized and in compliance with regulations.
