Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Lab Testing Technician 2 in Richland, Washington


Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Energy Processes & Materials Division focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.


The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a skilled technician to maintain and support lab space and equipment related to polymer materials characterization. This position will be heavily lab intensive and will support a variety of research efforts in mission areas such as:

  • Direct comparison of material effects of alternatives to those of radioactive cobalt-60 gamma rays for sterilization of polymer-based medical devices and other applications,

  • Advancing tools that support continued safe use of electrical cables in existing nuclear power plants generating reliable low carbon electricity, and

  • Numerous other R&D efforts aimed at understanding and measuring the effects of composition, environment, and history on plastic / polymer composite performance including failure analysis and recyclability.

The position holder will work with researchers to understand analytical and logistic needs and perform a variety of hands-on service work, sample testing, sample handling, coordinating equipment maintenance/repair. The position will be responsible for helping to coordinate crafts services, vendor, management, sponsor, and collaborator visits to the lab. The successful applicant will be able to provide examples and discuss in detail their experience with and ability to:

  • Operate and troubleshoot analytical equipment,

  • Maintain lab safety for self and others,

  • Adhere to and develop technical procedures that ensure reliable, repeatable, and documented outcomes,

  • Lead tasking where external help/manufacturer support is needed to resolve an issue,

  • Provide imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions to accommodate wide range of testing requests.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 1 year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HS diploma/GED and 4 years of relevant experience or Technical Institute Graduate (AA or higher) plus 2 years of experience.

  • Prior experience with analytical equipment (FTIR, DMA, GC-MS, TGA) is a plus.

  • Familiarity and hands-on use of mechanical testing equipment, data plotting and summary, image analysis or computational/statistical analysis packages such as (Python, R, Minitab, Origin), or related skills.

  • Major requirements of this position are the ability to be highly detail oriented and meticulous in documenting experimental efforts and the ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Background knowledge maintaining and working in a scientific lab space.

  • Background knowledge in the areas of chemistry, polymer/material science and mechanical engineering related to material properties and performance evaluation.

  • Strong data reporting, analysis, experimental, troubleshooting skills.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Experience with the use of testing standards or protocols.

  • Ability and willingness to teach and mentor others.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The staff member will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments. Exposure to mechanical hazards, hot surfaces, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
