Overview

As an indispensable partner in delivering safe, compliant, and efficient outcomes in support of Laboratory operations, science, science and technology, the Health Physicist assists with the implementation and continuing improvement of the PNNL radiation protection program. The position provides a key interface with science and technology staff partners, delivering subject matter expertise to facilitate successful project outcomes with high levels of performance. The Health Physicist works closely with staff to assure successful radiation protection program implementation for a myriad of projects, provides radiological risk management strategies, assures operational readiness, and develops creative solutions to complex activities utilizing radioactive material and/or radiation generating devices.
The incumbent is challenged to develop lab-wide implementing plans and procedures which assure compliance with rapidly changing applicable Federal and State laws and DOE orders, while doing so in a risk-based, cost effective manner. Responsibilities include the ability to work within broadly defined DOE rules (10 CFR 835) and integration with NRC and Agreement State regulatory framework to identify alternatives and recommended approaches. The incumbent will also be expected to be an advocate for identifying and implementing new efficiencies within the Radiation Protection Program.
Responsibilities
Responsible for developing, maintaining, implementing, and continuously improving the PNNL radiation protection program. Evaluates the extent of deployment and health of assigned radiation protection program functional programs to identify deficiencies and areas for improvement. Provides technical guidance, direction and recommendations to research and operations projects to assure effective and compliant field implementation of radiation protection programs, procedures, work control documents and regulatory requirements. Maintains currency on regulatory and technical developments in health physics and radiological engineering to formulate and institute appropriate program improvements that assure a state-of-the-art radiation protection program. Duties may include serving as a key interface with Radiation Protection program customers; reviewing research projects and identifying appropriate radiological controls; serving as subject matter expert for one or more program elements; conducting radiological training; and/or mentoring junior staff.
The radiological instrumentation Subject Matter Expert works to trouble shoot instrumentation; develop procedures and training and deploy new instrumentation; evaluate instruments to determine if they are appropriate for the types, levels, and energies of radiation; and work with different levels of managers and staff to optimize radiological monitoring.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-
MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related science and 8+ years of relevant experience, OR advanced degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related science and 6+ years of relevant experience.
Consistent with DOE-STD-1098, reading and comprehension skills in the English language are necessary for radiation safety training. Strong verbal and written communications skills are required for this position.
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP).
Demonstrated experience, leadership and subject matter expertise for development and monitoring of DOE Radiation Protection program functional elements as defined by 10 CFR 835.
Demonstrated experience, leadership and subject matter expertise in Radiation Protection Program assessment planning and execution.
Demonstrated experience, leadership and subject matter expertise in radiological instrumentation.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
Ability to obtain Radiological Worker II qualification.
Work at Building 325 – Radiochemical Processing Laboratory, a hazard category 2, DOE-owned non-reactor nuclear facility.
Potential exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation and standard industrial hazards
Additional Information
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
