Overview

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) delivers essential financial, contractual, and project management capabilities to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that are required as part of our management and operations contract to operate PNNL on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE).

Our BSD purpose in delivering these capabilities is to provide efficient, effective, and compliant business services in order to increase the scientific impact of PNNL.

This position requires onsite work a minimum of two days per week. When working remotely, PNNL employees are expected to maintain the same standards, requirements, and expectations of staff working onsite. When working remote, staff should be ready to go onsite on short notice to meet business needs.

Responsibilities

The Finance & Accounting Professional performs a variety of financial and/or accounting activities, which may include the maintenance, control, analysis and development of complex financial/accounting records, reports and systems and their ongoing support. These positions provide or assist in business advice and services to management and staff to ensure compliance with applicable federal laws, regulations, policies and sound business practices and adheres to and communicates business policies and procedures, including training and interpretation for the various organizations supported.

  • Performs key accounting tasks in one or more of the following areas: General Accounting, Accounts Receivable, Property Management, Treasury Services, Accounts Payable, Payroll & Tax, and Travel Services

  • Conducts monthly analyses to provide management information on the performance of costs and financial information

  • Leads other members in providing technical support to others for accounting entries, account reconciliations and general accounting questions

  • Prepares, reviews, and validates financial data

  • Documents procedures to ensure compliance with government accounting requirements

  • Provides support to internal and external auditors, as directed by management

  • Provides advice and services to management and staff to ensure compliance with applicable federal laws, regulations, policies, and good business practices

  • Leads team in the adherence to and communication of business policies and procedures, including training and interpretation for the various organizations supported

  • Leads others in solving complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Uses analytical thinking, tools, and judgement to identity innovative solutions

  • Manages projects with moderate resource requirements, risk and/or complexity. Demonstrates breadth of expertise in specialized area and exercises judgment in selecting financial and accounting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions

  • Communicates complex concepts to various levels of management to impact the achievement of customer, operational, project or service objectives

  • Works independently with guidance in only the most complex situations. Provides mentoring and training for Laboratory staff. Seeks out collaborative opportunities.

This posting is intended for several openings anticipated to become available in Financial Operations over the next few months. The BSD Financial Operations division is looking to add professional staff in a variety of areas which may include General Accounting, Accounts Receivable, Property Management, Treasury Services, Accounts Payable, Payroll & Tax Management, and Travel Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Battelle's financial systems and processes.

  • Demonstrate proficient use of standard office equipment; demonstrate proficient use of MS Office Suite (specifically Excel and Access).

  • Knowledge of FAR, DEAR, Cost Accounting Standards and PNNL Charging Guidelines.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
