Job Responsibilities/Duties

This Environmental Specialist position is responsible for providing environmental regulatory support to the Tank Farm Contractor. Position will support management of environmental issues, provide environmental regulatory services and oversight to projects and operations, coordinate and support flow down of environmental requirements into projects and operations, support environmental regulatory and compliance interactions, and supports/implements overall environmental regulatory strategies, policies, procedures, and standards.

Responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist include, but are not limited to following activities:

  • Support the WRPS Environmental Protection Training program and training lead.

  • Assist primary program owner of the Environmental Protection Department's corrective action program, reports, and associated requirements.

  • Provide back-up and support to the company's overall compliance inspection and external agency visit program, processes, and requirements.

  • As needed, review/comment on various technical documents, work instructions/packages, and procedures.

  • Upon request, provide support, including in the field and posted radiological zones, to WRPS' internal assessment program and requirements, compliance, and other programmatic aspects. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment).

  • Support the preparation and negotiation of environmental permits.

  • Obtain and then must maintain all required certifications, training, medical, and qualifications necessary to performing assigned work scope.

  • Assist in developing tools and processes to verify compliance of requirements.

  • Be physically capable of performing the required field work (ability to walk, stand, and move on uneven industrial surfaces for potentially lengthy periods of time, go up and down stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and perform assigned field work while wearing required PPE in both extreme hot and cold environments, etc.).

  • Be able to obtain and retain required medical clearances and training required to have unescorted access for Tank Farm Entry (i.e., wear a respirator) and be a Radiological worker.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Grade16:

BA/BS Degree Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law, or a similar, related field of study, and Two (2) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Grade 17:

BA/BS Degree Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law, or a similar, related field of study, and Five (5) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Grade18:

BA/BS Degree Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law, or a similar, related field of study, and Seven (7) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of radioactive and mixed waste practices and requirements, (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, etc.).

  • Experience with environmental regulatory agencies and compliance inspections.

  • Experience with the DOE iCAS software and processes.

  • Experience teaching, educating, training, or otherwise mentoring, especially on environmental requirements or processes.

  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Experience in providing Environmental compliance support.

  • Background in construction, waste site remediation, or facility operations.

  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.

  • Radiological Worker II training.

  • Strong computer skills including any experience with database work, websites, or Microsoft products.

Grade 16:

Hiring Range Minimum: $83,950

Hiring Range Maximum: $105,750

Grade 17:

Hiring Range Minimum: $92,238

Hiring Range Maximum: $116,213

Grade 18:

Hiring Range Minimum: $101,525

Hiring Range Maximum: $128,075

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
