Overview

PNNL's Earth System Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientistssteward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction.

Our research focuses on understanding and mitigating operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes predicting the impacts of natural hazards and extreme climate events on Earth and human systems, along with the impacts of wildfire, flooding, sealevel rise and storm surges. We focus on understanding and mitigating environmental contamination and increasing the resiliency, security and sustainability of water resources. We provide geointelligence through advanced sensing and data analytics to forecast complex systembehaviors and operational performance to understand human-natural systems. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, advanced monitoring, and remote sensing of environmental systems for energy and national security. It also includes developingenergy systems, including geothermal energy, sustainable oil and gas production, storage and utilization, along with carbon sequestration.

Driven by a “science-to-solutions” philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decisionsupport through the development of tools and solutions.

Responsibilities

Are you interested in making the world a better place while gaining valuable research experience to launch your career? PNNL is seeking undergraduate students with a passion about creating a sustainable energy future through science and engineering to join us for summer internship. The Energy and Environment Diversity Internship Program (EEDIP) provides a 10–12-week paid, research-based experience for students who are traditionally underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields.

​EEDIP interns in our Earth Systems Science Division will experience firsthand how PNNL addresses some of our nation’s toughest problems. Join our division of over 400 experts and explore how your training in fields such as, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, architectural engineering and buildings sciences, systems engineering, data sciences, energy policy, and economics, can position you for a high impact career at a national lab.

You’ll be matched with a mentor based on your education, career interests, and project opportunities, and assigned to a research group working in one of the following areas:

• Subsurface Science

• Risk and Environmental Assesments

• Operational Systems Engineering

• Earth System Predictability and Resiliency

• Applied Decision Systems and Analytics

EEDIP interns also take part in the Gold Experience, which includes networking with fellow interns and PNNL staff, and professional growth opportunities throughout the summer. This experience helps interns become educated on the breadth of research undertaken at PNNL. Many students return for multiple internships and successfully apply for full-time positions following graduation. 

Preference is for interns to be located at a PNNL location (Richland, WA) to ensure an impactful experience with their mentor and collaborators.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.

• Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Applicants should be working toward a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree, or related degrees below.

• Applicants in the following disciplines (or closely related programs) are preferred:

• Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering

• Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or Building Sciences

• Systems Engineering

• Energy Policy

• Economics

• Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Cyber Security Engineering

• Data Sciences

• Preference will be given to candidates from programs with an applied emphasis on energy and power systems and building systems.
