Candidates for this position will support work being performed in PNNL’s Emerging Threats and Technologies Division within the National Security Directorate (NSD). The Emerging Threats and Technologies Division’s mission space is comprised of cybersecurity, infrastructure protection, policy and intelligence, and security systems expertise. The organization consists of over 300 scientists, engineers, and analysts with backgrounds in cyber, nuclear, intelligence, policy, data science, and other fields. Within the Emerging Threats and Technologies Division, cyber experts sit in one of three organizational groupings:

  • Cyber Analytics and Analysis

  • Cyber Risk Reductions

  • Cyber Resillience Foundations

We are looking for multiple Cyber Security Engineers to join our teams in one of three major topic areas: CySCRM Analysis, OT Integrity Investigations, and Network Security Analysis Research. These positions are within the research organization and develop solutions for external sponsors. It does not operate within the enterprise IT support organization.

Responsibilities

Designs, deploys, and operates systems, networks, applications, and tools that underpin cyber security and cyber defense. Provides integration of hardware, software, and other components to solve operational challenges for cyber defenders. Performs data and systems engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems. Engineers and deploys security and defensive countermeasures and controls. Ensures system security needed in operations are assessed, established, and included in design and development; executes security requirements definition, systems analysis, systems design, security hardening, security test and evaluation, and certification and accreditation. Supports operational systems and performs activities such as vulnerability scanning, network, and system security configuration, etc. Design and architecture of new approaches, methods and techniques for cyber defense and resiliency for information technology and operational technology systems and networks. May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence and other government organizations and agencies.

This posting is focused on engineers to assist in OT integrity Evaluations.

Experience with: Risk assessments

  • Regulations regarding cybersecurity and supply chain risk management, to include NERC CIP, NIST 800, or others.

Experience in performing software vulnerability analysis on IoT and SCADA devices, to include:

  • OT software or firmware reverse engineering

  • Programming or provisioning PCS, relays, or other OT equipment

  • Intermediate understanding of Ghidra, IDA Pro, or related tools

  • Working knowledge of multiple ISAs including x86, ARM, and MIPs

  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems such as VxWorx and real-time processors

  • Experience in performing reverse engineering of large binaries

  • Experience with obscure software liberties, compilers, and ISAs

  • Proven knowledge of debuggers, disassemblers, and de-compilers

  • Worked with team to publish vulnerability reports and/or CVEs.

  • Knowledge of standard and nonstandard network communication protocols and cryptography

  • Creating and analyzing SBOMs or HBOMs

  • Intermediate understanding of digital and analog electrical components

  • Intermediate software design and creation, to include at least one programming language

Must also be able to:

  • Work as a member of a geographically distributed team

  • Mentor others

  • Speak and present to leadership

  • Write detailed forward facing engineering reports

  • Experience with leading small engineering team members

  • Demonstrable ability to handle multiple tasks on a single project

  • Attention to detail

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related disciplines, with related experience

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
