Overview

Communications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.

Responsibilities

PNNL’s Content and Quality group is seeking a detail-oriented and productive communicator to team with others and bring speed and efficiency to the production of energy- and environment-related communications materials. This is an ideal role for a flexible, multitalented communicator with extensive experience creating collateral and content in multiple formats, particularly related to transportation (e.g., bioenergy and hydrogen) and renewable energy (e.g., wind energy).

Specifically, we’re looking for candidates who excel at developing written stories around PNNL’s research in bioenergy, hydrogen, and wind energy for both PNNL’s external website and Department of Energy websites. Ideal candidates will also be excellent at teaming and working collaboratively with researchers and other communicators. They will also build relationships with sponsors (i.e., DOE and others) and possess exceptional project- and time-management skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve on a team of communications professionals that leads a wide spectrum of projects across the Communications Division. Duties will include the following:

  • Partnering with a communications partner to meet strategy and goals in the energy efficiency and renewable energy domains

  • Work closely and independently with energy efficiency and renewable energy communications partners to identify incoming projects and review materials to be published in the public domain

  • Developing compelling articles that tell the story of PNNL’s energy efficiency and renewable energy research

  • Leverage written materials content for newsletters, emails, calendars, digital displays, and similar channels

  • Collaborating with specialized teams in the division—newsroom, creative services, editing—and lean on the skills and professional support of others to complete projects as per established workflows

  • Collaborate with the social media professionals to develop and implement campaigns on various platforms (e.g., Twitter and LinkedIn)

  • Use the division’s resources repository to house relevant content and the division’s Jira-based workflow system to record assignments, monitor progress, and route work

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to proofread content for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style; a dedication to quality writing

  • Experience with science and technology writing, specifically in domains pertinent to bioenergy, hydrogen, and wind energy

  • A talent for interviewing others and probing for impactful content that will resonate with audiences, along with a knack for delving into technical papers to understand and formulate a compelling story and follow-on questions

  • Strong customer service orientation with exceptional attention to detail and follow through

  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing communications plans

  • Self-motivated and resourceful; able to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, and professional environment

  • Known for gracefully handling pressure and competing deadlines; able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and to function in a fast-paced environment

  • Basic experience and comfort using social media, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook

  • Experience writing content for multiple formats (e.g., internal and external newsletters, websites, social media, reports, and presentations)

  • Experience working in a virtual environment including proficiency with virtual technology (e.g., Zoom and Microsoft Teams) and collaboration best practices

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills including use of templates, content controls, and styles

  • Experience with, or knowledge of, content management systems, especially Drupal and SharePoint

  • Experience with newsletter software (i.e., HubSpot, Constant Contact, etc.)
