Overview

PNNL’s Communications organization is comprised of over 100 talented communications professionals committed to elevating PNNL’s reputation, inspiring action, and engaging audiences by transforming the Lab’s science into influential communications and compelling stories.

Communications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.

Responsibilities

PNNL is seeking a senior-level strategic communicator for Communications Lead for Industry Collaborations and Commercialization . This role will team with PNNL’s Office of Collaboration and Commercialization (OCC) to develop insights, strategies, and campaigns that boost partnership and licensing agreements, reduce market barriers to entry for emerging PNNL technologies, and motivate PNNL’s researchers on their own pathway to inventorship.

Prime candidates will naturally be able to engage, elevate, and inspire others—core tenets of PNNL’s Communications and External Engagement mission. Engage our industry stakeholders to foster partnerships and accelerate commercialization of PNNL intellectual property. Elevate PNNL’s reputation among industry, entrepreneurs, corporate influencers, and other audiences to position PNNL as a boon to U.S. business, economic impact, and critical marketplace technology. Inspire stakeholders and staff by showcasing PNNL’s inventions, influence, and impact on industry.

About the PNNL’s OCC:

OCC is PNNL’s impact arm. OCC’s team of experienced executives, inventors, mentors, collaborators, and product development champions have a proven record of bringing PNNL’s research to the marketplace, creating impact from innovation, and delivering on the technology transfer mission to boost U.S. global competitiveness and national security. Through researcher education and outreach, the team identifies and protects the intellectual property, innovations, and inventions developed at PNNL. Through collaborative partnerships and licensing, the team accelerates research outcomes, fosters entrepreneurship, and delivers a return on taxpayer funding in the form of taxes and re-investable royalty returns. The team works to mitigate and overcome barriers to entry in the market and to smooth pathways and processes to commercialization—doing so accelerates PNNL technology transfer from the lab to the marketplace.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and execute communications strategies and campaigns in support of PNNL’s commercialization efforts.

  • Build and maintain outstanding relationships with OCC leadership, staff, and industry contacts. Regularly work them and with PNNL’s science communicators to align communications efforts.

  • Understand OCC’s audiences (current and prospective licensees and partners) and their motivations, pathways, and barriers to partnering with PNNL or licensing PNNL tech. Leverage market, competitor, and product information to produce insights and materials for OCC team use. Advise on ways to improve outcomes through communications.

  • Drive lead generation through external communications efforts and strategic plans: news and media strategies, outreach/engagement strategies, digital campaigns, technology and software marketing plans, and other comprehensive approaches to boost awareness of PNNL’s intellectual property, partnership, and licensing opportunities among target audiences.

  • Develop and implement an internal communications and events strategy (conferences, webinars, panel discussions, and entrepreneurial training) that regularly engages PNNL researchers—boosting their awareness of OCC’s mission and value and improving their aptitude for producing marketable software or tech.

  • Build and foster relationships with associations and organizations to build networks, identify opportunities for speaking engagements and events which will assist in driving business; scheduling these events and following up on leads that come from these events. May serve as company representative at tradeshow and conferences.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams. Integrate and align commercialization communication outcomes with institutional strategies and plans.

  • Align with and support the PNNL brand through all communications efforts/products.Stay current with communications and commercialization industry trends and opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant experience, a MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a senior B2B communication or marketing executive in research company focused on tech transfer, commercialization, licensing, and partnerships.

  • Strategic communications development experience to drive high-level communications planning, aligning annual initiatives with long-term vision and objectives.

  • Understanding of demand generation marketing and multi-channel campaigns with a talent for translating business goals to communications strategy.

  • Experience and talent in providing guidance on market positioning, competitive differentiation, and emerging trends.

  • Recognized collaboration skills and experience working in cross-functional teams to plan and execute outcomes-focused communications work.

  • Experience defining, tracking, and reporting on communications objectives to prove value of communications efforts and determine future approaches.

  • Flexibility to adapt to a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Creative thinker with a strategic approach to problem-solving.

  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Confident executive presence with a track record of effective collaboration with and strategic support for senior executives.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
