Responsibilities

As a Principal Chemical Engineer within the Chemical & Biological Processing (C&BP) Group, you will be recognized as an expert technical leader supporting our impacts in the in catalysis, process development and/or reaction engineering space. This is a critical role to identify and steward growth areas, facilitate groundbreaking research efforts and collaborate with stakeholders in industry, academia, and with collaborative National Laboratory partners. This role is for an integral leader who will shape PNNL’s approach to addressing societal challenges through the transformation of underutilized carbon sources into sustainable materials, chemicals, and fuels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Is a nationally recognized subject matter expert in the Chemical Engineering capability space. Leads projects with notable risk and complexity while developing C&BP strategy for project execution. Provides technical expertise to existing and new research efforts, collaborates with stakeholders, and defines future research programs.

  • Collaboration: Work with colleagues across PNNL and external partners to build high-visibility research projects aligning with the Department of Energy’s goals and other key stakeholders. Sought out to lead laboratory teams that influence operations and strategies.

  • Project Development: Responsible for growth in C&BP competency at PNNL; This role offers high visibility and influence in research and technology development related to conversion processes. The individual will be a key leader in driving the development and expansion of the C&BP competency at PNNL. Responsibilities include leading proposal development, managing innovative projects, and identifying emerging opportunities in scientific and technological advancements.

  • Project Execution: Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives.

  • Mentorship: The staff member will manage a portfolio of mid to large scale projects; Mentoring mid-career and senior staff across PNNL. Fosters growth and development of aligned technical staff.

  • Research & Innovation: Translate stakeholder needs into funded research programs and leverage current and emerging capabilities to meet program goals. Ensure proposed solutions include broad cross-section of PNNL technical capabilities to meet client technical needs. Requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop novel solutions to unique and complex research problems.

  • Communication: Communicates complex concepts, anticipates potential objections, and persuades senior stakeholders to steer research direction.

Specific Duties:

  • Stewards PNNL’s reputation in the Chemical Engineering space through the application of science and engineering principles and theories to solve complex problems.

  • Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory.

  • Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams.

  • Develops, leads, and defines technical approaches. Individual will display considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives, will generate new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities.

  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on projects or tasks, integrating the capabilities of work team members.

  • Support scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project level.

  • Demonstrate ability to acquire funding for projects with programmatic impact at the sector and division level.

  • Embrace and communicate the importance of quality, safety, and security within the work team.

  • Build networks at a national level.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • PhD with 5+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in heterogenous catalysis, chemical process development, and/or reaction engineering.

  • Extensive experience in petrochemical process development.

  • Proven experience in translating stakeholder needs into research programs.

  • Demonstrated ability in developing, proposing, and leading new projects.

  • Excellent communication skills, with experience delivering compelling communications to varied audiences.

  • Significant experience supporting and managing safe operations of engineering scale systems.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The work involves significant laboratory and complex systems operations. High risk activities include systems operating at high temperatures and high pressures, and complex chemical hazards.
