Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Chemist – Catalysis in Richland, Washington

Overview

At PNNL more than 120 scientists and engineers in collaboration with experts from universities, industry, and other national laboratories explore and develop the chemistry and technology of catalysts that will enable energy efficient processes.

To advance catalysis sciences, PNNL is seeking an international scientific leader to establish and lead a new PNNL initiative focused on “Closing the Carbon Cycle”, areas that are difficult to electrify but continue to need decarbonized. This is a unique opportunity to build a new area of research at PNNL, collaborate with a diverse set of researchers and to develop an innovative research program in catalysis science.

The successful candidate will have expertise in heterogenous catalysis, homogenous catalysis and/or bio catalysis with a strong background in both catalysis synthesis and design as well as catalyst evaluation. They will build and lead a new Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) initiative focused on “Closing the Carbon Cycle” which is an internal PNNL investment intended to develop significant renewable carbon feedstock expertise in both the fundamental and applied spaces. The incorporation of data science and conversion methods beyond thermal will be important aspects of the favorable application. The initiative is expected to lead to substantial follow on funding, i.e. a large research center.

The selected candidate will further develop and execute the vision and scope of the initiative in collaboration with teams within PNNL. They will also contribute to transition the initiative to external funding and fostering strategic national and international collaborations. Moreover, they will contribute to developing the broader catalysis /closing the carbon cycle strategy for PNNL.
