Job Responsibilities/Duties

The Flowsheet Definition & Analysis group is responsible for maintaining and progressing the River Protection Project (RPP) Integration Flowsheet by minimizing mission risk through the identification and closure of technical gaps. This includes developing and refining process flowsheets related to execution of the River Protection Project Mission specifically focused around Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW), waste feed delivery, future high-level waste processing, and new chemical processes that need additional definition prior to the development of a Process Control Plan. Flowsheet development activities often involve the use of flowsheet simulations and/or technical studies and calculations to assess the robustness and validity of a particular process decision.

This position is for a senior-level Chemical Engineer who will perform technical studies and evaluations in support of the RPP mission. This engineer will be responsible for:

  • Performing systems engineering activities, including functional analysis and requirements definition, alternatives analysis, and risk assessment;

  • Preparing and issuing technical reports, evaluations, flowsheets and spreadsheet calculations;

  • Verifying and checking reports and spreadsheets prepared by others;

  • Extracting and analyzing data from databases and process model output;

  • Participating in the professional development of others, including mentoring of junior engineers and interns, holding brown bags and making presentations on areas that can improve the collective knowledge of the group, and participation in Flowsheet Activity Review Committee meetings;

  • Functioning as the lead specialist engineer on a task force or special assignment;

  • Planning and conducting work requiring judgement in the independent evaluation, selection and adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria;

  • Acting as a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of assignments.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Engineering or related technical discipline

Ten (10) years of related experience

Desired Qualifications

Familiarity with chemical process flowsheet development

Experience with chemical process operations

Advanced skills using Microsoft Excel
