Job Responsibilities/Duties
The Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford tank farms contain approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes, most of which originated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel to produce plutonium for defense. The mission of the DOE River Protection Project (RPP), one of the world's largest and most complex environmental cleanup projects, is to protect the Columbia River by eliminating the risk to the environment posed by this waste.
The Mission Analysis and Planning (MAP) group within Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) supports the tank waste treatment mission through the development and analysis of plans, risks, contingencies, and alternatives for mission execution. Planning activities occur on a range of time scales, from detailed near-term operational planning through long-term system planning. Plans and analyses are backed by computer simulations and process modeling.
WRPS is seeking an engineer to join the Near-Term Planning and Integration Team within the MAP group. The accountabilities of the engineer and team include maintaining a near-term technical planning basis, ensuring the integration of near-term field operations, developing and analyzing contingency plans, and ensuring near-term plans and decisions align with long-term mission objectives. This includes interfacing with WRPS operations and project managers to ensure that planned operational activities are cohesive and consistent with long-term mission needs. In support of these responsibilities, the team maintains and operates rigorous computer simulations and projections of tank waste treatment activities along with integrating and analyzing data from multiple sources including schedule data, risk information, waste inventories, and operational requirements.
The engineer position has the following responsibilities:
Interface with multiple organizations to maintain awareness and integration of planned/ongoing projects and activities
Perform modeling analysis of planned activities to proactively identify issues/risks and develop/evaluate contingency plans
Leverage modeling tools and engineering expertise to identify innovative and cost-effective approaches to meet operational targets and cleanup milestones in a highly constrained operational environment
Provide technical input to operational decision-making, prioritization, and fiscal year planning efforts
Develop, maintain, and verify the implementation of model requirements for assigned model systems
Develop and execute test cases for model implementations using independent calculations and SQL queries
Communicate results of analyses in static and interactive formats, utilizing multiple methods including Visio, Excel, Tableau, Power BI, and PowerPoint
Author technical reports and presentations, and present results to technical and non-technical audiences
Identify and support the implementation of automations and work process improvements to increase the efficiency and capabilities of the team
Please Note: This position is being advertised under the current Tank Operations Contractor, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS). However, now that transition activities have begun a candidate selected for employment may be hired under the incoming contractor, Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) contract. Further details will be provided during the hiring process.
