Job Responsibilities/Duties

The Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford tank farms contain approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes, most of which originated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel to produce plutonium for defense. The mission of the DOE River Protection Project (RPP), one of the world's largest and most complex environmental cleanup projects, is to protect the Columbia River by eliminating the risk to the environment posed by this waste. The Software Development and Maintenance (SDAM) group supports the development and maintenance of both the near-term and long-term strategic planning software used by the tank farm contractor along with various other software that is used by the group.

The SDAM group is looking for a chemical engineer to lead a small group of software developers and engineers to expand the modeling and reporting capability to provide support to the WRPS mission within the Engineering organization. The position includes development, support, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, testing and deployment of modeling software and other supporting activities. The position has the following responsibilities:

  • Oversee the flow of day-to-day operations.

  • Implement, debug and review features in the modeling software C# and/or Gensymn G2

  • Elicit Technical and Software Requirements from stakeholders and customers

  • Perform engineering evaluations to support requirements writing, analysis and review.

  • Build schedules, track timelines and monitor progress to completion.

  • Ensure procedural compliance with Software Life Cycle process.

  • Support the preparation of necessary documentation.

  • Provide mentoring and leadership for junior staff.

  • Provide technical input to procedures.

  • Generate daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly progress reports.

  • Interface with other organizations that support mission modeling and software development.

  • Demonstrate the ability to generate alternative solutions using sound engineering principles.

  • Provide input and analysis on the development process for improvements and efficiencies

Required Qualifications

Grade 18:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline;

  • Seven (7) years of related experience

Grade 19:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline;

  • Nine (9) years of related experience

  • Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 20:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline;

  • Ten (10) years of related experience

  • Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to perform as a member of a team.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to convey and present ideas/information effectively to peers and management.

  • Knowledge of leadership principles and strategies.

  • Knowledge of operational process control principles and problem solving.

  • Experience with chemical process engineering, including topics such as ion exchange, evaporation, heat transfer, mass balances, vitrification and process design.

  • Programing/Software development Experience (preferably in an OOO Language)

  • Understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Previous experience working in a nuclear facility or nuclear project.

Grade 18:

Hiring Range Minimum: $104,175

Hiring Range Maximum: $131,425

Grade 19:

Hiring Range Minimum: $114,475

Hiring Range Maximum: $144,325

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $126,025

Hiring Range Maximum: $158,875

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
