Microsoft Corporation Technical Writer II in Redmond, Washington
We are the office of the CTO for Microsoft. Whether it is providing insights to the SLT, giving meaning to an “AI First” company, or helping to figure out the true meaning and impact of “Edge Computing”, the Office of the CTO is down in the trenches, working with our engineering teams across the company. We gather information, synthesize recommendations, drive cross company workstreams and cross industry partnerships and otherwise engage in activities that inform the CTO and move the needle on Microsoft’s strategic and technical direction. The CTO also spends a significant part of his time building strong strategic relationships with other leaders in the tech industry and beyond and figuring out opportunities where we can be working together more for the good of the industry and broader community. We are looking for a Technical Writer to support the Office of the CTO in the development and creation of white papers and technical documentation that will provide clear vision and direction on OCTO priority projects. The person in this role will need to work collaboratively with our technical advisors to gather information and create compelling that will enable our engineering teams to achieve more.
The ideal person should be a self-starter who is comfortable working on highly strategic projects with cross-industry impact and executive level engagement. He or she must be able to work effectively with a cross-functional group of stakeholders that include the rest of the OCTO and key engineering stakeholders across Microsoft. Be able to identify potential opportunities for content additions, improvements, and innovations and effectively pitch those ideas to the team and stakeholders. She or he must also be able to perform functional and editorial quality assurance on content as appropriate. The ability to build strong work back plans with clear deliverables is critical.
Skills and Qualifications
Proven ability to gather information from others (engineering team, cross-functional partners) to produce content
Demonstrated strong written, verbal and presentation skills with at least two years technical experience collaborating with software and hardware engineering teams
Flexible, versatile writing across form factors, subject matter, and audiences
Detail-oriented and a strategic thinker; ability to map deliverables to the big picture
Cultural awareness - identify and accommodate cultural differences
Research/analysis skills - the ability to research audience, technologies, industry trends, & financial data
Attention to detail - required in all materials
Executive maturity - must be an exemplary and respectful representative of the OCTO
Optimism/resilience - the ability to remain positive amidst constructive criticism
Discretion - Required with sensitive corporate material
Education and Experience
Education Level Preferred
Communications or Engineering degree would be the ideal academic background for this role
Years of Experience Required
7+ years of experience in technical writing and/or communications
