Microsoft Corporation Technical Advisor in Redmond, Washington

The Office of the CTO includes a team of Technical Advisors, each covering a subset of our core initiatives. The Technical Advisor (TA) to the EVP/CTO functions in a role that extends the capacity of the CTO and the CTO’s broader team by generating research, synthesizing insights into specific technical domains, doing hands-on prototyping & technical exploration, driving initiatives that span across the organization, and helping multiple teams to move towards common goals across Microsoft.

The role requires tight coordination and collaboration with leaders including Technical Fellows & Distinguished Engineers, engineering team leaders, TA to the CEO, and the Corporate Strategy group. She/he will help the CTO with technical prioritization decisions, understanding key industry technical and social trends, and other research priorities.

This TA role will focus on our Web3 investments across Microsoft, including efforts on whether and how to introduce and integrate Web3 technologies in new and ongoing product efforts and influence company leadership. The work will connect with Microsoft's Web3 vision of trust and safety, compliance, openness, interoperability, and enabling more ethical & equitable economic distribution practices, while being environmentally sustainable.

This individual willhelp withtechnical prioritization decisions, understandingkey industry technical, ethical, regional,and socialtrends. The ideal candidate has deep experience in the crypto space, solid domain knowledge, intense curiosity, and a demonstrated ability to make fast forward progress and thoughtful strategic proposals and deeply influence senior decision makers in a rapidly changing environment. Responsibilities

Primary responsibilitieswillinclude:

  • Collaborate with & help teams evolve their understanding of the rapidly changing landscape of Web3. Help set a common strategic vision in partnership withthe engineering leaders whoare developing products using Web3 concepts.

  • Research to synthesize key opportunities, issues, progressto-date and divergent points of view and positions.e.g. How/If centralization still plays a part in the decentralized eco-system?

  • Collaborate closely with internal and external experts to keep Microsoft at the cutting edge of Web3 technologies and the ethical and social challenges they face

  • Engage with CTO oniterative investigations and prototyping as needed. Drill down into technical areas based on the CTOs sense ofcompanypriorities/market trends.

  • Produce recommendationsto Microsoftwhich may range from vision to individual solutions, depending on the topic, scope, and complexity.

  • Coordinate product strategy and lead through influence and persuasion across numerous partner teams, working on all aspects of the business.

  • Represent OCTO Web3 aspirations at executive-level discussions, external organizations, and industry events, and in executive-level conversations with industry partners and executive teams.

  • Identify where to leverage technology from other internal teams or external services and where to build our own.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience in Technical Program Management and/or Software Engineering

  • Experience building software for customers, using a broad array of technologies that may include both Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies

  • Experience with Web3 technologies – examples may include but are not limited to: NFTs, DAOs, DeFi, Crypto, smart contracts

  • Experience with cloud computing or distributed solution needs in high scale scenarios

  • Are dedicated to ensuring that Web3 sustainably empowers every individual and organization to achieve more

  • Have deep experience and passion for the Web3 space and a creative product mindset

  • Have demonstrated ability to work through biases and preconceived notionsthrough systemic, disciplined research and investigations

  • Appreciate direct communication. You’re both an active communicator and an eager listener

  • Have the proven abilityto navigate large organizations, to influence and inspire peers in engineering and in broad product development, work through high levels ofambiguity and drive clarity to senior leadership

  • Can pursue breakthrough thinking by assessing established and emerging thought leadership

  • Can build bridges and assist with developing relationships with external industry and academic thought leaders; develop and maintain own relationships

  • Effective communication style that conveys expertise, clarity, and confidence. Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently in written or verbal form.Having a track record of speaking externally is a plus.
