We are hiring a Software Engineer II to help define, build, and manage a platform that will enable the next generation of education experiences on any device, at any time and aims to serve millions of educators and students across the globe.
As a Software Engineer II , you will have the opportunity to develop AI and ML-powered platform components and workflows accessible across multiple Microsoft user experience hubs in Office, Windows, and Teams. You will primarily develop backend code and play a key role across all areas of the engineering lifecycle. This includes eliciting requirements from customers, defining platform components and features in partnership with other teams, UX designers, and Product Owners, building the components by writing the code, testing it, shipping it with quality and on time, and sustaining it through its maturity. You will learn about new technologies, challenges, and opportunities in the Ed Tech sector, and become an even better collaborator and communicator. We also expect you to share your ideas, ask questions, show a desire to improve our team, and learn and adapt quickly.

Responsibilities
Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
Creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
Contributes to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provides estimation.
Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
Leverages the work of others, including the work of peers, of internal Microsoft solutions, and of open-source and industry solutions, to avoid reinventing the wheel.
Designs cloud solutions using microservice architecture and other techniques. Packages up solutions to make them easy and attractive for other teams to follow.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
2+ years experience building cloud services (such as on Azure and AWS) accessed through industry standard mechanisms such as RESTful APIs.
1+ year of experience working with AI/ML technologies to build user facing features.
Other Requirements
Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
Depth of knowledge and language experience in .NET C#.
Experience with cloud compute and cloud storage, preferably Azure.
Experience in service delivery technologies (ASP.NET WebAPI+MVC Razor, WCF) and industry standards (REST, OData, GraphQL, Json).
Scalable database background (SQL, Azure Table, Documents DB, etc).
Understanding of identity systems (oAuth2, etc).
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
