We create modern tools & services that help developers build apps & services for a variety of platforms, including Windows, iOS, Android, Azure and many more. The team builds developer tools (Visual Studio & Visual Studio Code), and designs & develops compilers & runtimes for C#, TypeScript (JavaScript) & C++.  Our tools & services help a wide spectrum of developers all the way from professional developers to middle school students.  

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer  to help us modernize the identity platform for the Visual Studio client. You will have the opportunity to overhaul the experience for Visual Studio customers to make their GitHub and AAD (Azure Active Directory) authentication experience both seamless and secure. This is a high impact role where you'll get to work in areas core to the platform of Visual Studio. You will work with program managers to understand customer needs, develop experiences that make customers more productive as they work with their team members to develop their apps & services. You will work in a collaborative environment to architect the future of authentication in Visual Studio, ship your changes to customers frequently, and learn from customer feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Working with a broad technical customer base

  • Collaborating with multiple engineering feature teams in Microsoft

  • Figuring out difficult technical problems in a foundational space that will affect Visual Studio's ability to deliver on features that target new platforms or provide new experiences 

  • Build & design code that has one of the most direct correlations to developer satisfaction, and by delivering quality, performant, and elegant experiences you can greatly enhance a developer's day-to-day enjoyment 

  • Design, implement, debug, and deliver rich developer experiences and services using C#, and/or C++ 

  • Validate the experience and prevent regressions by contributing automation and unit tests as part of delivering features

  • Monitor the adoption and performance of the features that you deliver at scale, by adding and then examining telemetry in order to prioritize your time and deliver the most customer impact

  • Interact directly with customers through the Visual Studio developer community site (developercommunity.visualstudio.com) and deliver fixes for issues to customers quickly

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft,customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Software design, coding and debugging experience

  • Familiarity with .NET and MSBuild

  • Previous experience with authentication and/or security

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
