About our Team . The Microsoft Cloud Security group provides cybersecurity research, risk expertise, and engineering leadership to secure the Microsoft Cloud. Products supported by the group include Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender for Cloud, which secure our customer’s infrastructure using machine learning, cybersecurity research, and reliable and highly scalable engineering solutions. Our solutions empower security organizations to effectively detect, protect, investigate, remediate and restore their infrastructure across all leading cloud providers in the face of cybersecurity threats.

You are an expert in language modelling and have kept abreast of proposed improvements to transformer architectures. You have ideas about how to improve the state-of-the-art and apply them to new domains. You’re a curious “learn it all” and seek to learn from those around you, even as you share your own experiences and insights.


  • Explore bold research ideas: design and conduct scientific experiments, learn and iterate on further improvement of research under the umbrella of NLP for Security

  • Conduct applied research in large language models applied to information security domain

  • Provide NLP research expertise to product groups and create long-term business opportunities through research outcomes

  • Collaborate as a middle ground between top-tier academic research and applied researchers in product teams

  • Communicate internally and externally through academic and industry conferences, publications, open-source releases, patents and other mindshare venues such as blogs, media, interviews, etc.


Required Qualifications:

  • Track record in research areas in deep learning and NLP, as evidenced by publications in top academic conference(s) and/or open source code contributions

  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience in realizing research into products

  • 2+ years hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to simplify and explain complex ideas.

  • PhD with a thesis focused on large language modeling, natural language processing, information retrieval, graph neural networks, or related area

  • Proven publication record in top conferences ML conferences such as NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, KDD, ACL or infosec conferences or workshops such as IEEE S&P, AISec, CAMLIS, DEFCON AI Village, IEEE DLS workshop

  • 1+ years hands-on experience with transformer architecture

  • 1+ years of experience using GitHub, Azure DevOps or similar

  • 1+ years of experience using Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP or similar

  • 1+ years with large-scale data processing tools

  • Expert knowledge in security, including but not limited to anti-phish, user/entity behavioral monitoring

  • Strong problem solving and debugging skills

  • Growth mindset: excited to learn and to help others learn

  • Hands-on and crafty, enjoy building things to solve unbounded problems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify and explain complex concepts

  • Ability to work independently to actively identify and drive solutions for evolving business problems
