Microsoft is committed to ensuring that we develop and deploy our AI technologies in ways that uphold our AI principles and warrant people’s trust.  The Office of Responsible AI (ORA) plays a leading role in this effort as part of Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) team.  With a cross-company mandate, we establish internal policy for how our engineering and sales teams implement responsible AI practices, enable our community of Responsible AI Champs to support the rollout of our responsible AI program, and review engineering and customer projects that require additional input based on potential impact.  We also contribute to new laws, norms, and standards to advance responsible AI for the benefit of society at large. 

We are seeking a Senior Program Manager, Responsible AI. This role would be part of ORA’s Internal Policy & Practice (IPP) team, whose remit includes developing responsible AI policies and practices that scale across the company and supporting the implementation efforts for our Responsible AI Standard. ORA’s IPP team works closely with ORA’s Sensitive Uses and Emerging Technologies team, which focuses on providing guidance on Microsoft’s most sensitive and cutting-edge AI products, emerging technologies, and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the tracking, coordination, and communication of responsible AI transparency requirements and practices across teams;monitor progress and drive accountability amongst stakeholders; and identify potential risk areas, dependencies, and blockers, and drive mitigations and solutions.

  • Developscalable practices, templates, guides, and other materials toenable product and engineering teams to meet their transparency requirements.

  • Support the drafting and review of responsible AI transparency documentation prior to publication.

  • Review and assess responsible AI transparency collateral, including internal training materials and external briefing documents for field teams, customers, and external stakeholders to ensure consistency with our responsible AI programs and practices.

  • Lead programmatic efforts to advance our Responsible AI policies and practicesacross Microsoft’s custom projects, partnerships, and supply chain.

Qualifications

Required Q ualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Operations, Finance or related field AND 4+ years’work experience in technology policy,program management, legal and corporate affairs, governance, or related area

  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of work experience on issues pertaining to artificial intelligence, machine learning, or responsible AI.

  • A law degree, social science or other doctoral degreeor academic researchrelated to policy development and implementation, particularly related to technology and impact on people and society.

  • Experience in in large-scale computing, modeling, or applied research or data science; orBachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.

  • Experience working in or with a large, matrixed organization.

  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven track record of being able to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders. A key attribute will be the ability to work across multiple disciplines and cultures.

  • Proven record of being an effective team player dedicated to collective successes. The ability to promote cooperation and solve problems in a timely, creative, and professional manner. Proficiency at working closely and collaboratively with multiple departments and executives, and in cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to rapidly changing environments and demands.

  • Proven record of experimentation and openness to feedback, learning from both successes and failures.

Business Program Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,600 - $183,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $122,000 - $200,500 per year.
