Welcome to the applied research arm of Microsoft Security AI (Artificial Intelligence), where we engage in research to create truly differentiating products and services across Microsoft’s Security Division. In the 18 months since our organization’s founding, we have driven the research behind Microsoft Security Copilot and a suite of both foundational and specialized AI models. Our project portfolio includes a variety of short-to-long-term horizon projects with applications across Microsoft security suite. We oversee and coordinate AI investments for Microsoft Security; work with engineering partners to accelerate and scale security research by making AI tools and data more accessible to security researchers; serve as Microsoft Security’s central hub for industry and academic partnerships; and drive thought leadership efforts to let the world know about our trailblazing work in security science and AI.

We are looking for a Senior Director of Applied Science who will lead research teams in the research and development of functional autonomous agents for security scenarios. This will require deeply technical innovation across Microsoft, academia and industry. You will collaborate and lead a team of world-class researchers to develop novel methods, tools, and frameworks for demonstrating autonomous capabilities. You will also collaborate with internal and external partners to apply your research to real-world scenarios and challenges. You will have the opportunity to publish your work in top-tier venues and contribute to the scientific community and the broader society.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership towards building autonomous security capabilities with demonstrated scientific rigor.

  • Influence product owners and leaders across Microsoft Security to ensure cutting-edge technology is being applied to products in a practical way that meets key business opportunities of significant scope and impact.

  • Champion innovative principles and forward-looking concepts guided by research trends in academia, OSS and industry. Form strategic partnerships with thought leaders across the company, in the industry and across domains.

  • Attract and retain great people; Know capabilities and aspirations of individual team members and invest in their growth.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years people management experience.

  • 3+ years experience in Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or other machine learning frameworks.

  • Experience in working with LLMs (Large Language Models)

Other Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/additional qualifications:

  • Experience conducting high-quality research and publishing.

  • Experience in working with large-scale datasets

  • Experience in applying machine learning to security and safety domains, such as malware detection, fraud prevention, or cyber-physical systems.

  • Experience in leading and mentoring researchers and engineers.

Applied Sciences M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
