Microsoft Corporation Senior Data Scientist in Redmond, Washington

The Windows Servicing and Delivery (WSD) organization at Microsoft is responsible for delivering updates to Windows-based devices worldwide. The team’s primary focus is on security, but also supports commercial and enterprise customers by enabling new device compatibility, improving reliability, and addressing upgrade challenges. WSD is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help build AI solutions for Windows update systems, shifting them to scalable, cloud-based solutions using Azure.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will design and deliver high-quality AI solutions. As a key contributor, you will need to quickly understand a variety of systems, deliver features with precision, and design AI skills which are scalable for the broader eco system and that are efficient to maintain. You will get to work on AI technologies that can impact millions of devices and shape the culture of a growing team.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality AI powered solutions for internal and external customer requirements.

  • Engage with key partners to understand state-of-the-art large language and machine learning models, run them at scale in a performant and cost-effective manner.

  • Apply advanced analytical and modeling methods to improve software development processes and code quality.

  • Mentor junior engineers and data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.

  • Anticipate, identify, assess, track, and mitigate project risks and issues in a fast-paced start up like environment.

  • Work in a cross-team environment to integrate with partner teams and their systems.

  • Understand requirements and create complete design specifications.

  • Prioritize your collection of work and delivering AI solutions in a timely fashion to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

  • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 1+ years customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.

  • Experience putting responsible AI principles (e.g., fairness, transparency) into practice.

  • Experience coding in a general-purpose coding language (e.g., Python, Java, Scala, C#, or C/C++).

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred Qualifications

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results))

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of experience contributing to or driving peer-reviewed academic papers.

  • 1+ year(s) of experience presenting at conferences in the research or industry communities.

  • 3+ years of experience conducting research as part of an academic or industry research program.

  • 1+ year(s) of experience developing and deploying production systems, as part of a product team.

Data Science IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
