Summary:

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a Research Scientist with a deep knowledge and experience in flexible/stretchable electronics fabrication techniques and a passion for developing manufacturing technologies. You will work within multidisciplinary teams to define technology development and execution plans, and help define the roadmap for flexible electronics manufacturing research. This role provides ample opportunities to work alongside research scientists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, electrical engineers, and software engineers to create the technologies that will usher in a new era of human-machine interactions that will make VR/AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world.

Required Skills:

  1. Develop design and fabrication strategies for making application specific flexible/stretchable devices and subsystems

  2. Plan and execute work for developing wearable electronic systems and applications

  3. Identify and solve fabrication problems and work with team members to design for manufacturing (DFM)

  4. Develop roadmaps and identify research activities towards achieving team goals and priorities

  5. Collaborate in lab environments with materials scientists, researchers, and engineers to develop cutting edge fabrication processes

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. PhD in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, material science or similar relevant field

  2. 3+ years experience post terminal degree in large scale electronics manufacturing platforms including roll-to-roll (R2R) and/or panel-based printed electronics manufacturing systems

  3. Experience with defining, developing, and executing research plans and activities for delivering stable manufacturing processes, and for the manufacture of flexible sensors/actuators

  4. Experience delving into scientific literature to inform and reinforce hypotheses, and perform the hands-on process optimization to define process windows and transfer established processes into manufacturing workflows

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Track record of achieving results, including first-authored journal publications

  2. Experience defining and leading early phase research activities for flexible/stretchable devices that resulted in a commercial product

  3. Experience transferring prototype processes to pilot or full-scale production

  4. Experience with patterning technologies (e.g. lithography) and additive/subtractive fabrication processes including deposition and etching
