This position is for a research internship with the Microsoft Health Futures (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/lab/microsoft-health-futures/) group at Microsoft Research in Redmond (US). Microsoft Health Futures is focused on empowering every person on the planet to live a healthier future. To this end, we are responsible for research, incubations, and moonshots that drive cross-company strategy, partnerships, and real-world impact across healthcare and the life sciences. We are an interdisciplinary team of experts and practitioners who endeavor to develop next-generation methods and tools for precision health.

Health regulatory policy is dynamic and multi-faceted, requiring an understanding of new and developing technologies, the health and life sciences industry, and the principles and considerations informing policy in areas such as safety and reliability software as a medical device, real world evidence, privacy, ethics, and responsible AI. The Scientific and Regulatory Affairs team of Health Futures is seeking a Healthcare Regulatory and Policy research intern to review and synthesize developments in the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape impacting precision health and digital healthcare globally.

The use of generative AI in medicine holds much promise for future breakthroughs, as well as faster and less costly approval of new diagnostics and treatment therapies. As the focus of this internship, we would like to study the potential for how generative AI can be used in the drug development lifecycle to accelerate the approach to areas such as regulatory filings, generation of real world evidence, clinical trial documentation and audits. With the potential for this content to become increasingly reliant on AI generated content, we need to consider how both regulators and professionals engage and develop trust. You will collaborate with a team of top-notch researchers, medical practitioners, and regulatory professionals to explore an area such as the below, based on current research directions:

  • Research the application of co-audit tools (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/co-audit-tools-to-help-humans-double-check-ai-generated-content/) based on generative AI to quality management systems and processes related to preparation of regulatory filings in the drug development context.

  • Evaluate the development of regulatory frameworks in health and life sciences, particularly as related to the use of AI to generate real world evidence, to educate a diverse audience and facilitate discussions about the impact of regulation on our work.

  • Collaborate with our interdisciplinary team to identify implementation challenges and best practices for responsible and safe deployment of generative AI technologies in health and life sciences technology research.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a Masters, PhD, or Graduate program related to digital health policy, regulation, user research and/or bioethics.

  • At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare or life sciences R&D or policy setting.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

  • In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Preferred Qualifications

  • You should have a general understanding of machine learning and data science practices in health and life sciences, and a desire to study the policy implications of emerging technologies in these domains.

  • You are passionate about the potential of technology and AI to improve human health.

  • You have experience/interest in conducting research into regulatory, legal and/or policy impacts of AI systems within the domain of healthcare and/or life-sciences.

  • You have demonstrated ability to document research into complex legal and/or policy frameworks.

  • Efficient analytical, organizational, and communication skills with a passion for collaborative work.

  • You enjoy seeing things from different points of view, creatively distilling the essence of ideas, and creating clarity in complexity.

The base pay range for this internship is - Applied Sciences IC2 : USD $5,090 -$10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, with the San Francisco Bay area and New York City Metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 -$11,030 per month.

The base pay range for this internship is- Applied Sciences IC3 : USD $6,290 -$12,170 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13, 240 per month.
