Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers to build the future of connection within virtual and augmented reality. We're developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses.

The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at FRL-R is a new generation of end-to-end real-time 3D scene understanding systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, computer vision, large-scale reconstruction and localization, as well as large-scale online inference and optimization. The Surreal team is seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead and support a group of world-class researchers and engineers in order to work on project Aria and to support this initiative.

Required Skills:

  1. Lead and support a team of engineers and research scientists to build the full technology stack across AR devices and the cloud.

  2. Partner with Research Program Management in developing a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategy.

  3. Be both a technical leader and people manager.

  4. Communicate cross-functionally and drive engineering efforts.

  5. Partner closely with many Facebook internal partner teams to create shared roadmaps and deliver on the product vision.

  6. Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics and process for regular assessment and improvement.

  7. Establish project frameworks and development processes.

  8. Communicate with the leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years of people management experience in multi-disciplinary global teams at the intersection of tech and product, including building performing teams and organization.

  2. 10+ years of software engineering work experience, including 5+ years experience of hands-on technical management.

  3. Experience in one or more of the following domains: Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Computer vision, Sensor Design & Calibration and Augmented Reality.

  4. Demonstrated experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance management.

  5. Leadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, drive best practices, and mentor team members.

  6. BS degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience leading a team to ship version one consumer software products.

  2. Experience managing teams productizing Computer Vision, 3D Machine perception or Virtual/Augmented Reality technologies from conception to end.

  3. Experience managing joint hardware-software development and associated rapid prototyping projects.
