Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is seeking a Principal User Experience (UX) Researcher. This team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

​​Within Azure Data, the Microsoft Fabric platform team builds and maintains the operating system and provides customers a unified data stack to run an entire data estate. The platform provides a unified experience, unified governance, enables a unified business model and a unified architecture. ​

​​As the Principal UX Researcher for the Data Cloud Studio Research team you will be responsible for becoming an expert in the motivations, workflows, and habits of data professionals and bring that expertise to the strategy, design, and growth of the many products and services in the data cloud suite. Our UX Research team takes a multi-methods approach combining expertise and creativity with both quantitative and qualitative methods with big data analysis to identify emerging patterns and usage, and uncover user insights, unarticulated needs, and new product/service priorities. Our approach to product experience optimization is important, ongoing, and rigorous.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a high-performing UX Research team with expertise in all types of research including qualitative, survey, usability, metrics, plus partnering with big data experts for analyses of behavioral data.

  • Foster relationships with PM and design teams throughout the Azure Data Organization so you stay close to our cross functional partners and their challenges.

  • Conduct a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research activities to inform product design, including but not limited to ethnographic explorations, usability studies, heuristic evaluations, interviews, contextual inquiry, surveys, user journey maps, benchmarks or any method that answers the most important research questions.

  • Create insight syntheses and connect these to product leaders through stories and other creative means to incite product growth directions.

  • Snap to organization-wide priorities and success criteria to design and execute a research program that meets the organization’s needs. ​

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 6+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 4+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR Doctorate in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Communications, Information Science, Information Architecture, User Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Social Sciences, or related field AND 3+ years User Experience Research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Comprehensive leadership skills to deliver projects and customer insights within and across product teams that result in robust product impact.

  • Advanced degree in Social Science or Human-Computer Interaction with a degree in a technical field.

  • Ability to plan and execute research against business needs.

  • Experience conducting research globally and working with global stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to impact and influence business decisions across boundaries, often in ambiguous situations.

  • An ability to form a point of view by quickly and effectively analyzing research data and presenting rich findings simply and clearly to influence product design and direction.

  • Proven storytelling and communication skills across leadership, engineering teams, designers, customers, and partners.

  • Recognized training and expertise in multiple research techniques.

UX Research IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
