Microsoft Corporation Principal Technical Program Manager in Redmond, Washington

We are looking for a Principal Technical Program Manager to help secure open source software in partnership with the Open Source Security Foundation. We are the Open Source Ecosystem team, part of the Azure Office of the CTO. We work across many parts of Microsoft to ensure we engage thoughtfully with the open source community. Our work spans areas such as open source security, cloud native computing, artificial intelligence, real time operating systems, and more.

Microsoft's engagement with the open source community has been collaborative. This role is responsible for continuing to strengthen that engagement. If you're excited about technology, innovation, and collaboration with the open source community, then this is a great role for you.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Technical Program Manager in the OSS Ecosystem team you will work with industry-wide communities to make anyone depending on open-source software more secure – this includes Microsoft, our customers, our partners, and our competitors.

  • You will play a key role in increasing the security of the open source ecosystem by thinking broadly and strategically. You will assess customer needs, look for innovative solutions, and work with Microsoft product teams and industry communities including the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) to define, prototype and develop solutions.

  • Ideal candidates are builders. You have been a software engineer or technical product manager in the past and understand what it means to run software at scale. You are pragmatic and can look at complex technical problems and create clarity, focusing on building solutions that are simple and operable in today's public cloud environments. This is especially important for our engagements in securing open source software in collaboration with the Open SSF.

  • Ideal candidates take joy in working with the open source community and have a track record of successful collaboration with this community in the past. You're adept at working across large, diverse organizations which may not always be aligned, both externally and internally. You're skilled at listening to different perspectives and then creating a unifying strategy for engaging with the community. Microsoft benefits from the community engagements and you'll increase Microsoft's ability to leverage open source tools, practices, and projects as part of our broader business.

  • We leverage written narratives, not PowerPoint decks, as they enable us to have richer discussions about our strategy. You're a skilled writer able to write documents that crystalize the critical issues to be discussed. You think big and have a track record for building virtual teams that deliver novel solutions.

  • This role will focus on security, integrity, and resilience across end-to-end supply chains. This work has a long arc with opportunities to positively impact the broader software industry. Part of this work involves standards development, specifically defining standards for data models, exchange formats, and service definitions. This work will include tool and process development as well as validation and maintenance of specifications.
