Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. ​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​ We are looking to hire a Principal Software Engineer to join our team.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership: Acts as a technical lead for high-impact projects, ensuring timely delivery with an emphasis on quality. While not directly managing a team, collaborates closely with engineers to guide project direction and execution, aligning technical and business objectives seamlessly.

Technical Guidance: Provides deep technical expertise in areas such as architecture, design, code reviews, development, quality assurance, and live site management. This role is crucial in maintaining the technical excellence of the team's output, significantly contributing to the success of projects.

Collaboration and Coordination: Works closely with Program and Product Managers to identify and prioritize the most critical, urgent, or impactful areas. Facilitates clear project scopes and ensures the efficient division of responsibilities among teams, maximizing project efficiency and aligning with the business’s sprint rhythm.

Mentorship and Best Practices: Embodies and promotes Microsoft's values through mentorship and collaboration, serving as a role model for engineers. Demonstrates best practices in task grooming and project backlog management, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation among peers.

Cross-Team Collaboration: Engages in partnerships with peer teams in similar technical domains to enhance cross-team collaboration and leverage shared knowledge and experiences. This collaborative approach not only supports team growth but also ensures alignment with the organization's broader goals and strategies.​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience, with 6+ years of hands-on technical engineering experience, including coding in C#.

  • 3+ years of experience as a Technical Lead, demonstrating leadership in guiding teams through complex projects.

  • 6+ years of experience in designing, building, and shipping large-scale cloud services, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality solutions.​

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications​

  • Experience in developing and maintaining client-facing SDKs, with a focus on usability, performance, and integration.

  • Proficiency in .NET development, essential for building and supporting SDKs and related applications.

  • Experience in managing the release processes of SDKs, ensuring smooth deployment and versioning.

  • Experience with ODBC, JDBC, and other database drivers, with an understanding of how to integrate them into SDKs effectively.​

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
