Our AI Infrastructure Engineering team is entrusted with designing and optimizing Singularity, one of the world's largest Graphic Processing Unit fleets, to enable core AI scenarios across Microsoft's ecosystem.

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer with experience in distributed computing, networking, and high-performance AI infrastructure. In this role, you will develop and scale compute and network solutions to support mission-critical AI workloads and tackle complex engineering challenges that shape the future of AI at Microsoft.

Responsibilities

• Architect and Implement : Lead the design and implementation of high-performance computing and networking solutions for large-scale AI models.

• Optimize Infrastructure : Enhance GPU infrastructure to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability.

• Collaborate Cross-Functionally : Work with AI researchers, cloud engineers, and product teams to deliver comprehensive AI infrastructure solutions.

• Develop Automation Systems : Create automation and monitoring systems to boost fleet reliability and operational efficiency.

• Ensure Performance : Identify and resolve bottlenecks in AI workloads, ensuring low-latency, high-throughput performance.

• Drive Innovation : Stay ahead of industry trends in AI infrastructure, driving technical strategy and innovation.

• Mentor Team Members : Guide and mentor engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

• OR equivalent experience.

• 6 + years in software engineering, focusing on distributed systems

• 3+ years of networking and high-performance computing

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

• OR related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript,

• OR Python

• OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

• OR equivalent experience.

• ArtificiaI Infrastructure Experience in AI model training and inference infrastructure.

• Networking Knowledge: Familiarity with SWIFT, InfiniBand, and high-speed networking technologies.

• Container Orchestration: Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and other container orchestration tools in large-scale environments.

• System Design: Understanding of fault-tolerant, real-time systems in high-availability settings.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
