Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington
The Azure platform needs to meet the performance demands of Azure, Microsoft's cloud services, and server application developers. The role provides the opportunity to make an impact in these high-growth areas that are critical for Microsoft. Azure and Edge Platform performance team works on the performance of core Azure components and services. We are responsible for understanding and improving performance end-to-end to help teams reach performance and efficiency goals for key Azure scenarios. Cross-team collaboration is integral to how the team operates.
We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer with deep expertise and experience in the areas of operating system, cloud, networking or storage performance, and Central Processing Units (CPU) architecture to carry out performance analysis and product re-design/re-implementation for optimal performance. The position provides opportunities for direct customer and business impact, technical leadership, area ownership and exec-level visibility. It also provides opportunities to work on some of the hardest performance problems in Azure. You will also engage closely with key industry vendors to optimize their hardware on Microsoft platforms.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Partner with stakeholders to measure, analyze, and optimize platform performance for key Azure scenarios. Make design and implementation changes to deliver best-in-class performance
Lead identification of opportunities to improve Azure platform design and code, and deliver written and verbal reports to educate others and drive positive changes in Operating System platform.
Lead the effort of creating and refining workloads and performance experiments to cover end-to-end cloud scenarios using available inputs and domain expertise.
Defining, enhancing and implementing the next generation of instrumentation, tools and capabilities to generate performance data in cloud environments.
Using telemetry and results of performance experiments to deliver performance analysis, insights, and opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications
Required qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C and C++ OR equivalent experience.
4+ years experience in software performance improvement of OS/system-level components.

These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
Proven software analysis skills with expertise in performance, concurrency, virtualization, hardware and software interactions with demonstrated ability to understand and improve the performance of OS-level components.
Kernel mode programming and debugging experience.
Deep knowledge of networking, storage, compute AND/OR processor architecture.
Ability to prototype performance improvements and develop analysis tools.
Knowledge of Windows and/or Linux internals, virtualization, and system architecture.
Ability to read, understand and reason about system and kernel level code.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
