Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer Azure Vanguard in Redmond, Washington

The Azure Vanguard team is seeking an experienced software engineer with expertise in cloud solution design and implementation, customer empathy, and a drive to improve the platform. Our team works with the largest and most forward-leaning customers.

These “vanguard” customers are lighthouses for their markets and require a distinct end-to-end customer experience that we are calling the Azure Vanguard Program.Within the program, we are building a dedicated team of engineers to address the unique technical problems faced by these customers. This is an opportunity to be a founding member of the team.

Responsibilities

Our team works directly with product groups across Microsoft, customer-facing field teams, and the customers themselves. Our work will be project-driven, covering many different technologies, and anticipating the future of the platform. The principal software development engineer role will focus on:

  • Architecting and implementing solutions, frameworks, and tools that address the top needs of our Vanguard customers.

  • Understanding relevant product roadmaps and aligning our work with those roadmaps.

  • Providing technical and architectural leadership with our team and with the customer.

  • Participating in customer events such as architectural design workshops and hackathons

  • Capturing insights about platform gaps to communicate back to product teams.

  • Governing our OSS contributions.

  • Promoting a positive team culture of collaboration, inclusion, and growth.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing and implementing solutions on Microsoft Azure.

  • 8+ years of experience shipping production software, service delivery, or in a customer-facing technical role.

  • Expertise in a modern programming language such as C#, Java, Python, Scala, Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, etc.

Individuals with a degree in a non-STEM field (or without a degree at all) who have retrained as a software engineer and demonstrated a commitment to lifelong learning are strongly encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep technical knowledge of cloud architecture and services, including networking, identity, data, governance, and security considerations.

  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages.

  • Experience with DevOps, SRE, or GRC.

  • Experience managing and governing open-source projects.

  • Experience as technical lead on an engineering team.

  • Experience with direct customer engagement.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check. This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
