Microsoft GenAI is hiring a Principal Researcher who will be working at multi-modality (MM) for language models.

The Principal Researcher will join the effort of training MM language models and exploring MM model use cases including MM agents, covering training synthetic data generating for image and videos, pre/post-training and their evaluation and supervised fine-tuning/reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).

This new group, Microsoft GenAI, works on creating novel state-of-the-art AI models, related infrastructure, and customization tooling. It collaborates deeply with OpenAI and many Microsoft teams across the company, such as Azure AI Platform, Microsoft Research, and numerous products.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include: 

  • Model development and training specifically for image and videos, including effective image and video encoders to integrate with language models 

  • Multimedia data preparation and processing as well as data curation and mixing 

  • Performance evaluation on various stages on public and curated datasets 

  • Collaboration with Microsoft 1P product groups 

  • Research and innovation: participating in the academic research of deep learning, computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP); exploring entire new problems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in the interdisciplinary areas of deep learning, computer vision and natural language processing (NLP), or a related field AND 3+ years related-research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience publishing academic papers in conferences as a lead author or essential contributor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with building large-scale machine learning systems via collaborations with a sizable team.

  • Proven track record for publishing in relevant research domain.

  • Rich experience in modern machine learning, particularly in modern CV, NLP and deep learning.

  • Experience in language (or language + vision) model training and evaluation.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Triton. 

  • Experience with data processing and handling large datasets.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and communicate complex concepts effectively.

  • Experienced in leading a fast-tracking engineering team in model development 

Research Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
