Microsoft's DeepSpeed is an open-source library built on the PyTorch (machine learning framework) ecosystem that combines numerous research innovations and technology advancements to make deep learning efficient and easier to use. DeepSpeed can parallelize across thousands of GPUs and train models with trillions of parameters. Our OSS (Open Source Software) has powered many advanced models like MT-530B and BLOOM, and it supports unprecedented scale and speed for both training and inference.

The DeepSpeed team is also part of the larger Microsoft AI at Scale initiative, which is pioneering the next-generation AI capabilities that are scaled across the company’s products and AI platforms.

The DeepSpeed team is looking for a Principal Research Manager in Redmond, WA with a keen interest in innovations and for building high-quality systems that will make significant impact inside and outside of Microsoft.

Responsibilities

  • You will identify gaps and determine which state-of-the-art technologies to incorporate into research pipelines. You’ll support the implementation of new technologies within a research pipeline and apply expert knowledge to support research projects.

  • You’ll lead a collaborative research effort to advance a long-term research agenda, yielding new prototypes, and theories to create social impact. You’ll contribute to ethics and privacy policies and ensure the development of technologies that uphold ethical considerations.

  • As a world expert you’ll expand collaborative relationships inside and outside Microsoft, contribute to decisions at a strategic level and create a measurable business impact. You’ll collaborate effectively and act as a major contributor to influential publications.

  • You will proactively provide mentorship and coaching to junior and mid-level team members. You’ll represent Microsoft and help develop a capability strategy that attracts talent with desired capabilities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 3+ years related-research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in designing and building high-performance computing systems (e.g., cache/memory optimization, high-performance GPU programming, compiler-based optimization, fine-grained parallel library and runtime), parallel/distributed systems (e.g., communication optimization, network architecture design, network programming) or machine learning systems.

  • 3+ years of experience with distributed systems in at least one of the following C++, CUDA, Python

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.

  • Experience participating in a top conference in High Performance Computing, Deep Learning, Machine Learning or AI domains.

  • Experience participating in a top conference in relevant-research domain.

  • Experience with performance analysis and optimization for CPUs and GPUs

  • Experience on different hardware such as both Nvidia and AMD GPUs is a plus Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field is desirable.

Research Sciences M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
