Azure Edge+Platform [E+P] is responsible for Microsoft’s Operating Systems, IoT and Edge products, Engineering Systems, and Health Platforms that span cloud-to-edge and edge-to-cloud. E+P is the platform team for the company and the foundation upon which virtually every Microsoft product and service, like Azure, Xbox, HoloLens, Visual Studio, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Teams, is built. E+P products and services enable engineers to build out, deploy, manage, monitor, and secure Azure, Windows, and the rest of Microsoft. Additionally, E+P is responsible for several multibillion-dollar businesses of its own including Windows and Azure Monitor. Engineering Systems [ES] is a team in Azure Edge+Platform that builds and operates the Engineering System for two of the largest businesses at Microsoft: Azure and Windows. We provide our engineers, who work on code ranging from Azure Services to Windows and Linux based products, with tools and services to empower them to deliver world-class quality and secure products, with efficiency and high developer productivity, in a fiscally responsible way. This in turn helps enable Microsoft to deliver more functionality, of higher quality, with better security, and do it faster and more economically.

Do you want to improve the productivity and wellbeing of tens of thousands of developers across Microsoft’s Cloud and AI (C+AI) division? The Engineering Thrive (EngThrive) initiative is redefining engineering efficiency and developer experiences across the company. EngThrive applies the principles of SPACE ( https://aka.ms/SpacePaper ) to establish a comprehensive framework for assessing and enhancing Microsoft's engineering practices through a consistent analytics approach and a set of ROBs necessary to drive change. The mission of EngThrive is to empower Microsoft engineers to achieve more by providing them with unparalleled developer experiences. We dig into the multifaceted aspects of engineering culture, exploring technical, cultural, and environmental factors that influence developer productivity and satisfaction; and then we apply those learnings to drive change.

As a Principal Product Manager for EngThrive within the Azure Engineering Systems (ES) team, you will orchestrate EngThrive's strategic initiatives, driving community engagement and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring the successful adoption and implementation of EngThrive standards, contributing significantly to the transformation of engineering practices and developer experiences within C+AI. This role will require working with partners and stakeholders in different disciplines, and on teams across the company. Being able to effectively communicate progress up to executive leadership will be necessary. A background in software development and demonstrated analytical skills will be critical for intimately understanding developer workflows and leading effective change.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Product Manager, you responsibilities will include the following:

  • Developer Workflow Expertise: Utilize your background in software development to deeply understand and improve developer workflows, ensuring EngThrive initiatives resonate with and effectively support Microsoft's engineering teams.

  • Data-Driven Leadership: Employ advanced analytical skills to derive actionable insights from telemetry that inform strategic decisions and lead to substantial improvements in engineering practices and productivity.

  • Strategic Product Management: Apply product management principles to spearhead EngThrive initiatives within C+AI, aligning efforts with broader organizational goals and ensuring a coherent approach to enhancing engineering culture.

  • Community Building and Engagement: Actively cultivate and engage a community of EngThrive champions within C+AI, facilitating collaboration, idea exchange, and mutual learning to drive localized improvements.

  • Executive Communication and Reporting: Effectively communicate progress, insights, and strategies to executive leadership and stakeholders, tailoring your approach to diverse audiences to maximize impact and understanding.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Navigate the complexities of working across Azure ES, C+AI teams, HR, and the central EngThrive team to advocate and implement changes that enhance developer experiences.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 8+ years experience in product/service/project/program management or software development

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of experience utilizing at least ONE query language (such as SQL, Kusto/Azure Data Explorer, Python Pandas, Jupyter Notebooks etc.), with the ability to analyze complex datasets and extract meaningful insights to guide decision-making

  • Experience managing diverse stakeholder relationships, and presenting complex information clearly to an executive audience

Other Requirements:

The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.

  • Prior experience as a developer is highly valuable, offering deep insights into developer workflows and challenges.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Kusto or similar query languages, with the ability to analyze complex datasets and extract meaningful insights to guide decision-making.

  • Experience in product management, particularly in roles focused on internal products or initiatives, with a track record of driving community engagement and executive communication.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the capability to lead by influence, manage diverse stakeholder relationships, and present complex information clearly.

  • Creative and strategic thinker able to adapt to changing priorities and navigate complex challenges, driving continuous improvement and innovation within a dynamic environment.

Product Management IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
